Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Hemsworth has cleared the air about his Thor video that stirred speculation over the Asgardian’s fate in Avengers: Doomsday. Since his last appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder, the God of Thunder has been absent from the MCU timeline, but he’s set for a major return in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.
While fans are eager to see Hemsworth back in action, a video he shared in May 2025 to celebrate his comeback sparked concerns that Doomsday might mark his final outing as Thor. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth addressed the buzz, clarifying that the video wasn’t meant as a farewell. He explained the true intention behind the post, assuring fans that it wasn’t a hint at the end of his time in the MCU.
This is what he said:
“I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, ‘Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here.’ We didn’t do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little,” Hemsworth says. “I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career. So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn’t anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way.”
Hemsworth is among several stars currently on set for Avengers: Doomsday, with Anthony and Joe Russo returning to direct, not only this film but also the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. And in retrospect, there was never a moment where his video outright stated that Avengers: Doomsday would be his final appearance. Having been part of the MCU since his 2011 debut in the first Thor, he’s long stood as one of the franchise’s cornerstone heroes.
Rumours suggest Thor’s role in Doomsday will be crucial, given his history in the MCU. Even if his involvement in Secret Wars hasn’t been announced, that may be more about Marvel Studios avoiding major Phase 6 spoilers than signalling his exit in 2026.
Following Hemsworth’s clarification, the odds seem stronger than ever that Thor will return for Secret Wars. The lingering question is whether Hemsworth will continue as the God of Thunder after The Multiverse Saga, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted at a franchise “reset.”
While future Avengers could see recasting, Thor might eventually be reimagined with a new actor. For now, though, Hemsworth’s comments make it clear that his time in the MCU isn’t wrapping up anytime soon, fans can look forward to seeing him wield Mjolnir again in Avengers: Doomsday.
