I’ve been using the OPPO Reno 12 Pro for a few days now and here’s my first impression. Among a sea of mid range smartphones, the OPPO Reno 12 Pro seeks to balance style, performance, and affordability. While it certainly has its strengths, it also reveals some compromises common in the mid-tier market.

The device’s visual appeal is undeniable. Its 6.7-inch AMOLED display is a feast for the eyes, delivering vivid colours and sharp contrasts. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures smooth scrolling and animations, adding a premium feel to the user experience. I’ve been testing the “Nebula Silver” colour way and while many reviewers made a “soap-dish comparison, I think its absolutely stunning and probably the highlight for me.However, the glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet, necessitating frequent wipes.

OPPO’s camera prowess is evident in the Reno 12 Pro. The triple camera system captures decent shots in daylight, and the portrait mode produces pleasing bokeh effects. Low-light photography, has seen a slight improvement and stands up well against other devices in this price range.

Performance is a mixed bag though, even with the Pro moniker. The MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset handles everyday tasks with aplomb. However, demanding games or multitasking can push the processor to its limits, resulting in noticeable stutter and lag. This is a common trade-off in the mid-range segment, where performance is often prioritized over power efficiency.

Battery life is an area where this device truly shines. The 5000mAh cell, combined with efficient power management, ensures the Reno 12 Pro can comfortably last a full day, even with moderate to heavy usage. OPPO’s fast charging technology is also a boon for those on the go, with an 80W charging block supplied in box.

A significant drawback however is the presence of bloatware. ColourOS, OPPO’s custom skin, comes pre-loaded with a plethora of apps that consume storage and can be frustrating to remove. While understandable as a revenue stream for the manufacturer, it detracts from the overall user experience. It really takes away from an otherwise pleasant software experience and I hope OPPO considers this in future models.

Priced competitively at around R17,300, the OPPO Reno 12 Pro offers a compelling package. It’s a solid choice for those seeking a stylish device with a good camera and decent performance. However, if raw processing power and a clean software experience are paramount, you might want to explore other options in this price range.

Ultimately, the Reno 12 Pro is a capable mid-ranger that delivers on some fronts but falls short in others. As with any smartphone purchase, it’s essential to weigh your priorities before making a decision.
