You know that feeling when the first few notes of Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” kick in and suddenly you’re eight years old again, sitting cross-legged on the carpet surrounded by your favourite toys? Yeah, Pixar knows it too. And with the new Toy Story 5 trailer, they’re cashing in on every ounce of that nostalgia.
Before we even get to the “tablet terror,” the trailer wastes no time reminding us why we fell in love with these characters in the first place. Woody still has that cowboy swagger, the kind that’s equal parts courage and self-doubt. Buzz is still overly confident but adorably clueless, the kind of guy who’d read a GPS upside down and still thinks he’s right. Jessie bursts in with that wild-hearted energy that could lasso the moon if she had enough rope, while Rex continues to prove that anxiety can be endearing if it’s paired with tiny arms and big enthusiasm.
Even Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head get their comedic jabs in, bickering like the world’s most dysfunctional couple who somehow make it work. And Slinky? Still the ultimate team player, stretching himself thin, literally, to keep everyone together. It’s all these quirks, these little reminders of childhood joy and chaos, that make the trailer’s setup hit harder. Because once the nostalgia washes over you, Pixar does what Pixar does best by pulling the rug right out from under your heart.
Our old friends are here: Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang. Except, if you remember the ending of Toy Story 4, where Woody had opted out, choosing a life apart from the shelf. Now he’s unexpectedly back. The trailer gives us that reunion, but the vibe is less “buddy road-trip” and more “old guard meets existential threat.” And what is the threat? Meet Lilypad. A frog-shaped smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee that hops into the story and immediately sets off a digital-age panic. The opening shows Bonnie unboxing the device while Woody and friends look on in wide-eyed confusion. It’s not just a new toy. It’s something beyond their world. Connected, talking, learning and updating. But for the gang, that’s downright terrifying.
This is Pixar at its most self-aware. The threat isn’t another toy or a forgotten child, its relevance itself. The Toy Story 5 teaser flips the script by exploring what happens when classic toys confront the very thing that’s replaced them. The dreaded screens. Lilypad isn’t just a gadget, she’s the embodiment of today’s childhood. Shiny, smart and always on. But for Woody and Buzz, that spells doom. As one online comment perfectly summed up:
“What we have here is toys vs. tech.”
It’s a funny premise, sure, but there’s something quietly devastating beneath it. Kids no longer reach for the cowboy or the space ranger, they reach for a tablet. And Pixar’s leaning into that existential ache with surgical precision.
Even in a short teaser, the emotional undercurrent is powerful. Woody’s return feels like unfinished business with a cowboy coming home to a world that’s moved on. Buzz, ever the optimist, insists “we’ve faced worse,” while Jessie wonders if “playtime” still means anything when it’s done through a screen. There’s a quick moment — blink and you’ll miss it — where Woody and Buzz share a look of fear in the face of becoming obsolete. That’s the soul of Toy Story, and Pixar’s still finding new ways to make us feel it.
Toy Story 5 is a reflection of how far we’ve come since the first film. Back then, toys feared being replaced by newer toys. Now, they’re staring down the screen that replaced imagination itself. It’s a story about change, about holding onto connection in a world that keeps updating. And if the trailer’s any sign, Pixar is once again aiming straight for the heart. So yeah, I’m all in. Woody’s dusted off his hat, Buzz has his wings ready, and somewhere out there, a tablet just learned what fear feels like.
Mark your calendars, Toy Story 5 is gearing up to blast off (or tumble gracefully) into cinemas on June 19, 2026. And you can bet we’ll be right there, boots polished and ready to ride!
