After spending a week with the OPPO A6k, the biggest surprise wasn’t the battery life. Boasting a 6500mAh battery, we already expected that to be good.
The real surprise was how confidently this phone steps into territory usually dominated by Samsung’s Galaxy A series, particularly devices like the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G and even the newer Samsung Galaxy A57 5G.
At first glance, the A6k looks like another affordable Android smartphone trying to win buyers with big battery numbers and a few marketing buzzwords thrown in. But after using it daily for a week, it becomes clear that OPPO understands something many brands are still missing: most people don’t need a “spec monster.” They just need a phone that works really well.
The battery life embarrasses most phones in this category
Let’s start with the obvious. The 6500mAh battery is exceptional.
Compared to the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G and Samsung Galaxy A57 5G, both of which feature 5000mAh batteries, the A6k simply lasts longer in real-world use.
That difference becomes noticeable very quickly.
Over the past week, the A6k handled heavy WhatsApp usage, YouTube, Spotify streaming, Chrome tabs, social media scrolling, navigation, some photos and constant notifications without becoming stressful to manage. Most days ended with ample battery left in the tank.
Samsung’s Galaxy A series still delivers excellent optimisation, but the OPPO simply goes further on endurance.
This is where OPPO starts challenging Samsung seriously
For years, Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup has owned the “safe recommendation” category in South Africa.
If you want a reliable mid-range phone, just buy a Galaxy A device. Simple as that.
But OPPO is starting to challenge that dominance properly now.
The A6k doesn’t necessarily beat the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G in raw polish or ecosystem maturity. Samsung still has advantages in software support, AI features and display quality.
But the thing is: The OPPO A6k costs significantly less while still delivering many of the features everyday users actually notice:
- 120Hz refresh rate
- Large display
- Massive battery
- 256GB storage
- Smooth day-to-day performance
- Modern design
And that is what starts changing the conversation entirely.

Performance is stable, not flashy
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685, the A6k is certainly not going to win any benchmark wars.
And that’s completely fine.
What OPPO has focused on instead is consistency.
Apps open quickly enough and multitasking proved stable. Scrolling remains smooth thanks to the 120Hz display. Social media apps, messaging, streaming, and casual gaming all run comfortably without the phone feeling any sort of stress.
The difference between this and Samsung’s A56 or A57 becomes noticeable mostly in heavier workloads and premium polish. Samsung’s Exynos chips feel more powerful overall, especially when it comes to gaming and advanced multitasking.
But for everyday users the gap certainly feels smaller than the price difference suggests.
The display is surprisingly enjoyable
One area where the A6k punches above expectations is fluidity.
That 120Hz refresh rate genuinely improves the experience. Social feeds feel smoother, app transitions look cleaner, and the phone simply feels more modern than many budget devices still stuck at 60Hz.
Yes, Samsung’s AMOLED panels remain superior when it comes to colour reproduction, contrast, and brightness. The Galaxy A56 and A57 displays are objectively better screens overall.
But OPPO made the right decision prioritising responsiveness and usability here.
Most people will notice smoothness before they notice colour accuracy.
Cameras are practical rather than ambitious
The 50MP main camera delivers decent results in good lighting conditions.
Photos are sharp enough for social media, colours look natural most of the time, and the camera app remains refreshingly simple. Open it, shoot, move on with your day.
Geek verdict
After a week with the OPPO A6k, the biggest takeaway is this:
OPPO is no longer just competing on price. It’s competing on relevance.
The A6k feels designed around the realities of everyday smartphone use. Long battery life, stable performance, smooth scrolling, enough storage, and a practical design all combine into a device that makes a lot of sense.
The OPPO A6k gets dangerously close in the areas many users care about most, while costing less and lasting significantly longer on a charge than it’s closest rivals.
And that makes it one of the more interesting mid-range smartphones currently available in South Africa.
