Production has officially begun on Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming standalone installment in the iconic space saga. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film boasts an impressive ensemble, now including Oscar-winning actress Amy Adams and rising star Aaron Pierre per The Hollywood Reporter.
Joining previously announced leads Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, and newcomer Flynn Gray, Adams and Pierre bring even greater depth to the cast. Additional supporting actors include Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. Flynn Gray is set to play the young charge whom Gosling’s character protects, while Amy Adams reportedly portrays Gray’s mother. Aaron Pierre brings his sci-fi chops as recently seen in DC’s Lanterns to the ensemble.
Starfighter is a wholly original story, detached from the Skywalker Saga, set approximately five years after The Rise of Skywalker. It expands the Star Wars universe with new characters and uncharted storytelling territory.
At the announcement of filming, Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool & Wolverine, Free Guy, and The Adam Project, expressed his exhilaration:
“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter… To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
The screenplay is written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously united with Levy on The Adam Project. Filming began on August 28, 2025, in the United Kingdom, with cinematography led by Claudio Miranda.
Star Wars: Starfighter is slated for theatrical release on May 28, 2027. This marks an exciting new chapter in the Star Wars universe, one that is unbound by legacy characters and centred instead on fresh narratives, headlined by a compelling new cast and experienced filmmaker.
