Newry, Maine – Forget your average date night. This past weekend, lovebirds took their relationship to new heights (literally) at the North American Wife Carrying Championship. Held at the Sunday River ski resort, this bizarre and hilarious event saw couples tackle a grueling 278-yard obstacle course, complete with hurdles, a muddy water pit, and a daunting sand hill. The catch? The husbands had to carry their wives the entire way.
Think of it as the ultimate test of strength, stamina, and spousal devotion. While the origins of wife-carrying are rooted in questionable 19th-century Finnish traditions (we won’t go there), today it’s all about good-natured competition and some seriously impressive athleticism.
Most couples opted for the classic “Estonian carry,” where the wife hangs upside down on the husband’s back, legs dangling around his neck. Picture a human backpack with a giggling face. This technique allows for maximum speed and agility, though it probably doesn’t do wonders for the hairstyle.
The crowd roared as couples sprinted, stumbled, and occasionally face-planted their way through the course. There were moments of pure triumph, like when a particularly muddy duo emerged from the water pit with a triumphant fist pump. There were also moments of sheer absurdity, like when one husband accidentally dropped his wife mid-hurdle (she thankfully landed in a pile of soft hay).
But the real prize? Oh, it was glorious. The winning couple, Jake and Kirsten Barney of South Paris, Maine, took home Kirsten’s weight in beer and five times her weight in cash. We’re talking a whole lot of brewskis and a hefty chunk of change. Now that’s what we call a happy wife, happy life!
