Whilst we are all familiar with the biblical story of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, Netflix invites you to step into the past and witness the Nativity from a fresh perspective. Experience the timeless story through the eyes of Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus.
The film has received online backlash because of its Israeli cast, especially for casting Israeli actress Noa Cohen as the mother of Jesus. It is because of this, that several people are now calling for a boycott, claiming historical inaccuracies where Mary and Joseph were actually “Palestinian.”
Director D.J. Caruso defended casting Israeli actors for the roles saying,
“It was important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be selected from Israel to ensure authenticity,” he told Entertainment Weekly
Netflix’s “Mary,” making its way to the streaming platform on December 6, stars Israeli actress Noa Cohen in the lead role, and Israeli actor Ido Tako as Joseph. “Directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) and written by Timothy Michael Hayes, this uplifting biblical epic follows Mary, Joseph, and their newborn son, Jesus, as they flee the relentless pursuit of King Herod, portrayed by two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins,” Netflix’s website announced.
Despite the controversy, Netflix’s “Mary” promises to be a timeless coming of age story, told through the eyes of a remarkable young woman, chosen for a momentous destiny. Witness her struggles as she navigates the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus.
When a miraculous conception leads to her being cast out, Mary (Noa Cohen) is forced to seek refuge. But danger soon follows as King Herod (Anthony Hopkins) unleashes a deadly pursuit of her newborn son. Bound by faith and fuelled by courage, Mary and Joseph (Ido Tako) embark on a perilous journey to protect Jesus at all costs.
