The future of ‘Gladiator’: Ridley Scott’s bold vision for the threequal.
It took two decades for audiences to be enthralled by the epic scenes in the colosseum in Gladiator 2. By the looks of it, the wait for Gladiator 3 will be much shorter. Ridley Scott, has already dropped hints to hollywoodreporter, showing his eagerness to return to the arena.
Gladiator 2 ends with Lucius (Paul Mescal) winning over the army and the people of Rome, after defeating Emperors Geta and Caracalla (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger) and the villanious Macrinus (Denzel Washington). This victory places Lucius at the centre of a power that can restore Rome to its former glory. But does Lucius want the job?
According to Scott, this is exactly where the threequal will emerge. Drawing inspiration from The Godfather Part II, where Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is now the undisputed leader of organised crime and has to decide how far he’ll go to keep his crown. “There’s already an idea,” Scott told The Hollywood Reporter. “I always had this idea that The Godfather ends with Michael not wanting the job, That is a good place to start”.
Scott hinted that the new Gladiator movie might be inspired by the life of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Even though Aurelius was shown as a good ruler in the first movie, Scott actually sees him as more of a tyrant, holding a critical view of the historical figure.
While a Gladiator 3 is on the horizon, it might be a while before filming begins. Scott is busy with a Bee Gees biopic scheduled for early 2025. However, Scott is known for his ability to juggle multiple projects, so this could still move forward quickly.
