Disney’s Lilo & Stitch was first released 22 years ago, and has remained a timeless classic. Although Disney confirmed Lilo & Stitch in 2018, there has been some delays. The film was expected to begin filming in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its production until late 2023. Shooting was almost complete when the months-long actors strike began in July and further delayed it. In February of this year, cameras started rolling again in Hawaii before finally wrapping up in early March. And now!, the live action Lilo & Stitch teaser has finally landed.
The teaser which is only 32 seconds long, shows the adorable blue alien demolishing spectacular sandcastles, and loving it. While the teaser isn’t very long, it shows the wonderfully chaotic Stitch as we have come know and love from the 2002 original. This live action version of Lilo & Stitch is set to be released in theatres on May 23, 2025.
To the delight of original Lilo & Stitch fans, the live-action remake will feature some familiar voices from the beloved 2002 animated film. Chris Sanders, the creator and original voice of Stitch, will reprise his role as the mischievous alien. Tia Carrere (Nani) and Amy Hill (Mrs. Hasagawa) will be returning to the Lilo & Stitch universe as new characters. Carrere will play Mrs. Kekoa, and Hill will portray a character named Tūtū.
The live-action Lilo & Stitch introduces a fresh cast to bring the beloved characters to life. Newcomer Maia Kealoha takes on the lead role of Lilo, with Sydney Elizabeth Agudong playing her older sister Nani. The role of David Kawena, Nani’s love interest, will be played by Kaipot Dudoit.
Rounding out the cast are Zach Galifianakis as Jumba, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, and Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles.
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind the lovely film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Lilo & Stitch is a wildly funny & touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family. “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten… when it comes to receiving the Disney live-action treatment.”
