Ditch the Resolutions, Embrace Intentions for a Joyful 2025

Tired of setting New Year’s resolutions that fizzle out by February? This year, try a fresh approach: choose a guiding theme or intention – like laughter, kindness, or forgiveness – to shape your year. This more gentle approach focuses on personal growth without the pressure and guilt of traditional resolutions.

With less than a month left before the start of 2025, many are looking to implement carefully thought resolutions for the new year. What will it be this time round, and will they be sustainable? Or is it just fanciful thinking at best. It’s funny that, many of us, including myself often think about creating the best versions of ourselves by settings goals that are often ditched by the first quarter of the new year, if not sooner.

Weight loss, hitting the gym, quitting smoking, lowering the consumption of alcohol  and abandoning procrastination are just some of the resolutions that keep getting made year after year without any actual resolve.  I personally think, that the whole idea of having a new year’s resolution has just become over complicated. Let’s be real!, some resolutions are made in the heat of the moment, while your heart may not be in it.

A new year, means a fresh start, a new page or chapter in your life.  There will never be a better time to try something new. So, to bring in 2025, why not change resolutions to intentions?. Make intentions that are simpler and sustainable to harness. Think of your New Year’s intention as a guiding theme for the year ahead, not a rigid rule. This approach will help you stay focused  without the pressure and guilt that often accompany traditional resolutions. It may seem like a ludicrous idea, but don’t bash it, till you try it!

Why not try to set your theme, to laugh more, be more kind, to simply forgive someone or worry less. While it might feel out of place to prioritise such intentions,  in a world filled with so much turmoil, remember that all the worrying, animosity and seriousness won’t change what’s to come. But embracing the little things with good intentions will help us evolve into better people, and just might change your worlds for the better.

It all starts with changing the way we think. People have been stuck in this rut of tradition that’s gone on for eons. It’s now time to change what was the traditional norm to  something more meaningful, authentic, and fulfilling.

Remember your days as children, when laughter flowed freely with friends and family and life was filled with humour. Well it’s time my friends, to rediscover the joy of laughter. Seek out more opportunities for humour and laughter. Not only will you improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, boost your mood, find greater happiness and also possibly add years to your life.

In keeping, with the theme of happiness and joy – forgiveness and kindness will empower you with the inspiring change from being a helpless victim of your circumstances, to becoming a powerful co-creator of your reality. Imagine learning to see people anew every day in terms of their future potential, not their past deeds. In becoming more loving, compassionate and understanding human beings, you gain the ability to have a deeper relationship with yourself and with the significant people in your life.

If there is anything that you should intentionally want to embrace in 2025, let it be, laughter to light your way, kindness to pave your path and forgiveness to set your spirit free.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
