Wicked boasts an incredibly talented cast, led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, who make the characters and their songs come to life in a new way. The movie , which screened in theatres on Nov. 22, had the highest opening for a musical adaptation with an estimated $114 million at the domestic box office. It is no wonder that the second installment is already getting ready to hit theatres November 21, 2025, just a year later. The wait for all the Wicked fans will be a short one, to return to the wonderful land of Oz where you can expect the unexpected.
The second film in Jon M. Chu’s two-part on-screen adaptation will see the witches of Oz, Ariana Grande‘s Galinda (Glinda the Good Witch)and Cynthia Erivo‘s Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) continuing with the story that began in the first film. The movies are based on the 2003 musical of the same name, which was originally structured on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire.
Having defied the oppressive Wizard in the first act, Elphaba now faces a new challenge, embracing her destiny as the infamous “Wicked Witch of the West.” Meanwhile, Glinda, bestowed with the title “Glinda the Good” by the Wizard, is thrust into the role of Oz’s protector against her former friend. In this climactic chapter, both witches must make choices that will forever shape their legacies and the fate of Oz.
Wicked 2 takes a sharp turn towards darkness, in a complete contrast to the optimistic tone of the first. The iconic song “Defying Gravity” marks Elphaba’s pivotal transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West. However, this “wicked” label is not hers by choice, but has been forced upon her by the Wizard and Madame Morrible (played by Michelle Yeoh) when she defies their plan to oppress the animals of Oz. This act delves into the complexities of power, perception, and the consequences of fighting for what’s right.
While the first “Wicked” film stayed true to the beloved Broadway score, “Wicked 2” will introduce two brand-new songs to the story and promises a thrilling expansion of the “Wicked” universe with fresh musical perspectives. The songs from Wicked are beloved by fans, so adding two new songs will create a huge difference in the soundtrack, though the actual content and themes of the songs are not known yet. Moreover its a safe bet to assume that the new songs will be able to match the tone of the originals as they are being written by the original composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz
While it’s uncertain how audiences will ultimately receive “Wicked 2,” the prospect of hearing two new songs from the original composer is already generating considerable buzz among fans.
