The AI search wars: ChatGPT Search goes free

OpenAI recently announced that ChatGPT’s AI-powered search engine is rolling out to all users, and it’s bringing some serious upgrades to the table. ChatGPT Search first debuted for paid subscribers back in October, but now, even those on the free tier can get in on the action.  Of course, you’ll still need an account and be logged in, but it’s a move that makes this powerful search tool accessible to a wider audience.

    Search Gets a Mobile Makeover

One of the coolest new features is the revamped mobile search experience. When you’re looking for a specific location, like a restaurant or a local attraction, ChatGPT Search now displays a list of results with images, ratings, and even opening hours.  You can even get directions right within the app. It’s a move that makes ChatGPT Search feel more like a traditional search engine, but with the added power of AI.

    Faster Searches, Smarter Results

Another handy upgrade is the ability to quickly surface relevant links when searching for specific types of websites, like hotel booking sites. Instead of generating a lengthy response, ChatGPT Search will first show you a list of links, then provide more details about each option. It’s a time-saver for those who know exactly what they’re looking for.

And for those who prefer to use their voice, ChatGPT Search now integrates with Advanced Voice Mode, automatically providing up-to-date information from the web. Unfortunately, this feature is still exclusive to paid users.

OpenAI has been busy adding new features to ChatGPT, including the text-to-image model Sora and a $200 per month ChatGPT Pro subscription.  With the addition of a free search engine, ChatGPT is becoming even more versatile, offering a range of tools that can assist with everything from writing and research to creative tasks and even finding the perfect restaurant for your next date night.
