Since its premier of Iron Man in 2008, The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has brought its fans a multitude of iconic comic characters to life, revolutionising how superhero stories are told. This multi-billion dollar franchise has seamlessly introduced fresh heroes and villains with every phase, constantly pushing the boundaries of its ever-expanding universe.
It is therefore no wonder that after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, fans have eagerly awaited the arrival of mutants within the MCU. Although a release date is yet to be announced for Marvel’s X-Men, it seems most likely that the X-Men won’t officially enter the MCU until after Avengers: Secret Wars. A film which will act as the conclusion to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga that began in 2021.
Though nothing has been confirmed, there have been reports of Marvel already eyeing a few actors for some X-Men roles in the MCU. The latest rumours surrounding casting choices, especially for the role of the next major villain, seems to suggest that actor Javier Bardem may just land the part. And if the rumour proves to be true the acclaimed Dune and James Bond actor could be stepping into the shoes of one of Marvel’s most sinister adversaries,Nathaniel Essex also known as Mr. Sinister in the MCU’s highly anticipated X-Men reboot reported cinemablend.
Bardem, famous for his exceptional performances in Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid and both Dune movies, would be an excellent match for the role of Mr Sinister. After all he is no stranger to the bad guy scene. The X-Men villain is portrayed as a geneticist obsessed with evolution between humans and mutants. His abilities, include regeneration, telekinesis, and genetic manipulation. All this combined with an intellect comparable to Magneto and Professor X, makes him a serious threat to the mutant community.
But, like all things that make its way via the grapevine, only time will tell if Bardem will secure the role. One thing is for sure though, the intention with the role of Sinister is to be the villain in the MCU’s next saga, so whoever gets the role will be around for quite some time.
