Better late than never, it looks like the arrival of a new more affordable iPhone is on the horizon
With all the rumours making the rounds of Apple launching the new lower cost iPhone SE (4th Gen) this week and none materialising thus far, I’m sure Apple fans have been left guessing as to when this will happen.
Well, the wait is over, Apple CEO Tim Cook now seems to have confirmed the latest updates on the social media platform X , with a cryptic clue. “Get ready to meet the newest member of the family,” he said, adding the date Wednesday, Feb. 19. A video accompanying the short message showed the Apple logo in silver, with a shifting metallic finish that may or may not be a clue about what we can expect.
While Cook has not specified any further details beyond the launch, Apple insiders believe it’s a new version of the iPhone SE with an iPhone 14-like design with flat rails around the edges. In terms of features this would mean it could include a larger screen going from 4.7 inches to 6.1 inches with a notch at the top. The iPhone SE 4 could potentially also come with Apple Intelligence thanks to an A18 chip, which powers the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Alleged leaked images also exhibit a matte black colourway and will house a FaceTime HD camera and biometric security sensors to power the FaceID feature. This means there won’t be a TouchID fingerprint sensor.
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to come with 8GB RAM to support the generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI)-based Apple Intelligence features such as Visual Intelligence, Image Playground, Genmoji, Clean Up tool, audio transcriptor, language translator amongst others.
Adding to this the iPhone SE 4th gen is rumoured to be Apple’s first device to boast a proprietary 5G cellular modem. Apple is expected to use the same modem in select devices such as the iPad and iPhone 17 series slated for release later this year.
The new iPhone SE is targeted at the mid tiered users and will come with an affordable price tag compared to the premium iPhone 16 series.
