If you were expecting a much more intelligent and intuitive Siri at some point in the future, then here’s the bad news: Apple has effectively slowed down its much-anticipated AI enhancements. These features, unveiled during WWDC 2024, were part of Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” initiative and were expected to make Siri more effective, more context-sensitive, and, indeed, not so much like an afterthought when compared to Google Assistant or Alexa. But now? Apple says they’re moving the rollout to ‘the coming year,’ which means iPhone users are stuck with Siri’s present limitations for a little longer.

What’s Being Delayed?

Among the most notable missing upgrades:

  • The on-screen awareness, which would enable Siri to identify things like addresses in messages and save them in your contacts directly.
  • Deeper app integration that would enable Siri to search for specific photos or perform in-app tasks without the need to touch the screen.
To some extent, Apple was attempting to evolve Siri to a voice-first model, where the user would not have to touch the screen as often. However, with this delay, it appears that we are back to the usual situation where Siri cannot handle simple tasks.

More Than Just Siri is Affected

This isn’t just a software issue—it’s impacting Apple’s hardware strategy as well. The company’s previously rumored smart home hub, which it intended to market as a competitor to the Amazon Echo Show or Google’s Nest Hub, is now delayed as well. The concept was to have a single smart home control device with Siri as its primary assistant. However, with Siri’s enhancements on hold, Apple’s smart home strategies seem to be stuck in a rut.

Meanwhile, The Competition Isn’t Waiting
While Apple slows down, Google and Amazon are speeding up.

Google has already begun to incorporate its Gemini AI across its products and services, improving the conversational interaction and voice recognition.
Last week, Amazon unveiled Alexa+, a more conversational AI-powered version of its assistant.
In other words? Apple’s competitors aren’t waiting, and Siri’s delays only stretch that gap.

Apple’s AI Strategy: Caution or Complacency?

The larger issue is whether Apple’s privacy-first ethos is simply inhibiting it. Unlike Google and Amazon, which rely heavily on cloud-based AI, Apple wants to do as much as it can on the device. This is wonderful for privacy—there is less data circulating around the cloud; however, it also means that Apple is inching along (some might say at a snail’s pace) when it comes to the evolution of AI.

What’s Next?

Apple still maintains that it has no intention of abandoning Siri and its plans to enhance its intelligence and usefulness, but for the time being, it is trying to play catch-up in an AI race that is quickly gaining speed. As Google and Amazon push the envelope, Apple’s delay poses a crucial question: Can it afford to dawdle, or is Siri destined to remain the dark horse among its rivals?
