The blue crew are on their way, and they are bringing the whole village with them. Mushrooms? Check. Magic? Check. Gargamel up to no good? Double check. But wait, this time, the Smurfs are levelling up in a world that looks flashier, funkier, and far more fabulous than ever before.
“To save their world, they must come to ours.” Huh? Why? To rescue Papa Smurf when evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel kidnap him. Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.
This is now the fourth Hollywood movie featuring the little blue guys created by Belgian artist Peyo, following The Smurfs (2011) and its sequels. This new reboot is directed by Chris Miller from a screenplay written by “South Park” writer Pam Brady. This fun new Smurfs features an all-star voice cast including Rihanna as Smurfette, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, with Kurt Russell & John Goodman as Papa Smurf.
The trailer previews a different style of animation that resembles 2D techniques, which marks a notable departure from the previous Smurfs films, which utilized CGI or 3D animation. However, like The Smurfs and its sequel, Smurfs will also utilize live-action as well. With the direction of Miller, who is known for his work on Shrek the Third and Puss in Boots, the film will combine modern animation techniques with a style that mirrors the original cartoon.
The upcoming Smurfs movie, set for release on July 18, 2025, has generated a mix of anticipation and skepticism among audiences. While the film boasts high-profile talent and a vibrant musical component, early reactions suggest a divided consensus.
The general consensus leans toward cautious optimism. While the film’s music and animation style have garnered praise, concerns about voice casting and plot originality persist. As the release date approaches, audiences remain hopeful that the final product will deliver a fresh and engaging experience for both new and longtime fans of the Smurfs.
