Americana: Criminals, Artefacts And A Waitress With Big Dreams

Well, saddle up, movie lovers, Lionsgate has unveiled the trailer for Americana, and it’s got more grit, charm, and offbeat swagger than a saloon shootout at high noon. Imagine a world where country dreams collide with black-market relics, and everyone’s got a secret worth shooting for. The trailer promises a genre-bending, bullet-slinging good time, complete with outlaw weirdos, small-town secrets, and one priceless Native American artefact that everyone seems willing to kill for.

Americana premiered in 2023 at the SXSW Film Festival, and has been waiting for release ever since. I guess this is a better late than never scenario. With Sydney Sweeney in boots, Halsey trading pop hooks for plot twists, and a rare Native American artefact up for grabs, this modern Western looks ready to stir the cinematic pot like a whiskey-soaked campfire stew. If the trailer is anything to go by, Americana might just be the coolest, quirkiest, and most criminally fun movie of the summer.

The narrative centres around a vivid cast of characters drawn into a high-stakes battle in the pursuit of a rare stolen Native American artefact. The artefact known as, Lakota “ghost shirt” surfaces on the black market, in a small South Dakota town. It is then that Penny Jo Poplin (Sydney Sweeney), a timid waitress with dreams of country music stardom joins forces with a heartbroken military vet, Lefty Ledbetter(Paul Walter Hauser) to claim it for themselves. But their mission quickly spirals into chaos, drawing the wrath of a violent criminal, Dillon Macintyre (Eric Dane), working for a shady antiquities dealer, Van Hickerson(Simon Rex). As the conflict escalates, new players enter the stage. We meet a determined Indigenous leader, Calvo(Zahn McClarnon) and a mysterious desperate woman, Mandy Starr (Halsey) on the run from her past, igniting a powder keg of greed, vengeance, and cultural reckoning.

Directed by Tony Tost in his feature debut, the film boasts a star-studded cast that offers a compelling glimpse into a modern-day Western that intertwines crime, drama, and dark comedy. With its blend of crime, culture, and off-kilter charm, Americana is riding tall in the saddle of a classic Western spirit—rebellious, raw, and ready to rumble.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
