From the sharp comedic minds that gave us The Lost City and Shotgun Wedding comes The Pickup, a rom-com caper where stolen hearts and stolen goods go hand-in-hand. Releasing August 6 on Prime Video, the film stars Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, and Keke Palmer in a heist-meets-heartbreak joyride that blends romantic chaos with criminal mischief.

In The Pickup, Travis (Davidson) plays a hopeless romantic who falls headfirst for a dazzling woman Zoe (Palmer), who he meets at a bar. The Problem with this is that, she’s not just out of his league. She is part of a crew running a high-stakes con, and he’s just volunteered to be their getaway driver. We also meet Russell (Murphy), an unpredictable mentor figure who may or may not be playing both sides. As the trailer unfolds, it becomes crystal clear that everyone’s working an angle, and love might just be the biggest con of all.

The trailer openins with Davidson’s voiceover: “I thought I was picking up a date. Turns out I picked up a job, a gun, and a very angry Albanian arms dealer.” What follows is a whirlwind of fast cars, faster dialogue, and even faster betrayals. One moment Palmer is giving smouldering eyes across a rooftop gala, the next she’s flipping a briefcase and revealing a handgun tucked in stilettos. And Eddie Murphy? Every line he delivers is laced with smirking menace and effortless charisma.

Director Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like a Man) brings his usual kinetic energy, blending slick, neon-lit visuals with sharp comedic beats. The chemistry crackles. Palmer is radiant and razor-sharp, Davidson is surprisingly endearing as the bumbling anti-hero, and Murphy is magnetic, anchoring the madness with a devilish wink. The trailer delivers a tone that is sexy, suspenseful, and just the right kind of ridiculous. There’s glamour, tension, double-crosses and yes, even a tango mid-gunfight.

The supporting cast includes Eva Longoria, Jack Kesy, and Andrew Dice Clay, all playing fast-talking schemers and morally flexible insiders, adding flavour and bite to the already high-octane ensemble.

    Geek Verdict:
The trailer for The Pickup delivers a delicious blend of action, attraction, and absurdity. With sizzling chemistry and a screwball plot packed with twists, this one looks set to steal more than a few hearts and maybe a few diamonds too.

It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
