Relay: The Life Of A Fixer Exposed From The Shadows

Relay isn’t your standard espionage thriller. The trailer for this upcoming August 22 release hurls its secrets at you, fast and furious, in a slick, neon-lit blur of shifting identities and deadly stakes. Riz Ahmed trades quiet intensity for icy precision, playing Tom, a professional “fixer” who facilitates complex negotiations between criminals and corporations, but never leaves a footprint behind. That is, until a job with a volatile client forces him into the open and into the path of danger that refuses to stay on script.

From director David Mackenzie (of Hell or High Water fame), Relay plays a deadly game of espionage. The trailer pulses with quiet dread and sharp tension, hinting at a labyrinth of betrayal, cryptic motives, and fragile control. Ahmed’s character is all clipped answers and unreadable glances, a man used to staying in the background, until the ground beneath him starts shifting. But the real intrigue kicks in with the arrival of Lily James’ character Sarah, a mysterious figure who may be ally, threat, or something in between.

As the trailer unfolds, we glimpse Tom’s pristine world unraveling, through eerie motel rooms, high-stakes negotiations gone sideways, and brutal encounters that suggest even the best-laid plans are no match for chaos. Every frame is loaded with atmosphere. Cold lighting, oppressive silence, and the constant sense that something just slipped out of reach.

There’s no room for car chases or explosions here, Relay offers a different kind of adrenaline. The tension comes from the waiting, the watching, and the knife’s edge between success and annihilation. Riz Ahmed’s performance seems quietly devastating, full of subtle dread and exhausted resolve. And when Lily James steps into frame, the emotional stakes shift again. This isn’t just about surviving a bad deal; it’s about unraveling what it costs to keep your soul intact when your job requires you to erase it.

Rounding out the cast is Sam Worthington, Willa Fitzgerald, Matthew Maher and Mike Holt.

    Geek Verdict:
Relay looks like a cerebral, slow-burn descent into moral grey zones and identity collapse. With Mackenzie’s measured direction and Riz Ahmed at his most restrained and potent, this trailer promises more than just a spy game. It teases a psychological duel where words are weapons and every silence screams. This is definitely a cold-blooded thriller that cuts deep.
