Live-Action ‘Hot Wheels’ Film Finds a Wicked Good Director

For generations, Hot Wheels wasn’t just a toy, it was the ultimate boyhood obsession. A rite of passage lined in orange track, gravity-defying loops, and roaring imagination. Whether you were launching die-cast cars off the kitchen counter or staging high-speed chases through living room obstacle courses, Hot Wheels was pure, unapologetic adrenaline in miniature form. Now, that childhood fever dream is shifting into overdrive, because the live-action Hot Wheels movie is finally underway.

Yes, that’s right! The iconic Hot Wheels brand is shifting into high gear, from shop shelves to the  big screen. Mattel Films’ long-gestating live-action Hot Wheels movie has finally found its director, and it’s someone who knows how to deliver style, speed, and cinematic chaos. J.J. Perry, the seasoned stuntman, turned director behind Day Shift, has officially signed on to helm the high-octane adaptation.

Backed by Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures, the project has been quietly gathering momentum. The Hot Wheels film promises to be more than just a toy-inspired cash grab. The creative team is aiming for a full-throttle thrill ride that captures the rebellious, stunt-heavy, daredevil DNA that has defined Hot Wheels for generations.

Perry’s involvement signals that the movie may lean heavily into grounded action with wild stunts and real cars, something fans of Fast & Furious and John Wick will likely appreciate. Known for his work as a second unit director and stunt coordinator on F9, John Wick, and The Fate of the Furious, Perry brings an action pedigree that could elevate Hot Wheels from kitsch to cult.

In a statement, Mattel Films teased that the film will be “a high revving story fuelled by high stakes and full throttle action,” aiming to deliver an experience that’s as much about heart and grit as it is about horsepower. The tone is said to blend emotional storytelling with “grounded and gritty” visuals, setting it apart from other toy-based films like Barbie or Transformers.

Mattel, fresh off the runaway success of Barbie, is accelerating development on a slate of brand-inspired films. With Hot Wheels, they’re targeting a more adrenaline-fuelled demographic, one that grew up racing plastic cars across living room floors and is now ready for a cinematic spinout.

As for the cast, there has been no announcement made yet. And plot details remain under high surveillance, but with Perry in the driver’s seat, expect jaw-dropping stunts, fast cars, and a story that doesn’t pump the brakes on ambition.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
