Derek Dixon, known for his roles on Tyler Perry’s Ruthless and The Oval, filed a $260 million lawsuit on June 13 in Los Angeles Superior Court, accusing Perry of a pattern of sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation dating from 2020 to 2024. Dixon alleges Perry exploited his influence over his career to manipulate and silence him.
The actor admits that taking legal action against Atlanta entertainment titan Tyler Perry was “terrifying,” but says he could no longer stay silent. In his first interview since the lawsuit Dixon explains, “I couldn’t just let him get away with this.”
“Everyone has the right to go to work without being sexually pursued by their boss,” he says. “My hope is that future actors and creatives won’t have to choose between chasing their dreams and protecting their dignity.”
According to Dixon, he and Perry met In 2019, at the studio launch party. Their relationship began professionally, with Dixon later cast in Ruthless and The Oval . In early 2020, he was invited to Perry’s home and alleges that Perry climbed into bed and began rubbing his thigh, an advance Dixon rejected.
Dixon also shared disturbing texts from Perry that included body-focused compliments (“thick,” “hips twist”), personal queries about him being “choked” or “guiltless sex,” and professional pressure tied to roles.
In June 2021, Dixon alleges Perry invited him to his Georgia home to discuss his pilot. The encounter turned violent when Perry pulled down Dixon’s underwear, groped him, and held his wrists to prevent him from stopping the assault. Dixon said he feared rape. He defused the situation by requesting pizza, then escaped to the guest house and locked himself in a bathroom.
The subject stayed hidden for years, leaving Dixon anxious about reputation and career loss. “I was too afraid to come forward,” he told The Hollywood Reporter
He says the decision to go public was driven by concern for future creatives. “Everyone deserves to go to work … without their boss trying to have sex with them,” and “I couldn’t stay silent anymore”. Private attempts to settle were insufficient to achieve accountability or industry change.
Tyler Perry’s attorney dismissed the claims as “fabricated” and “nothing more than setting up a scam”. Dixon says he’s faced online harassment and even death threats, but he remains resolute. He hopes his case strengthens protections and encourages others to come forward .
Dixon’s lawsuit highlights how significant power imbalances can be manipulated for sexual violence in the entertainment world. Men, particularly in male-dominated environments, rarely come forward. Dixon emphasises male survivors also deserve support .He insists that public legal action is necessary when private resolutions fail which is an echo of the broader #MeToo movement.
Derek Dixon’s statement is a courageous act, shedding light on alleged abuse and systemic failings. Whether or not his claims will be upheld in court, his decision to “break the silence” is already making waves, challenging power dynamics in entertainment and pushing others to seek justice.
