“Deadpool” Co‑Creator Rob Liefeld Labels Fantastic Four: First Steps“Impossibly Dull & Boring”
Rob Liefeld, the celebrated (and controversial) co‑creator of Deadpool, recently unleashed a scathing critique of Fantastic Four: First Steps, calling the latest Marvel reboot “impossibly dull & boring.” The comments underscore his ongoing dispute with Marvel Studios and its leadership.
Liefeld’s criticism accompanied a photo he shared on social media: a mostly empty IMAX theatre during a 5 p.m. screening of the film. In his own words:
“This was the 5pm Fantastic Four screening at my IMAX. I can tell you why there is very little repeat biz on this film. It’s impossibly dull & boring.”

He did, however, praise Vanessa Kirby, stating she “carries the entire film” and performed some “ridiculous lifts.” Additionally, he noted that the Franklin Richards baby was “the cutest kid ever on screen”
Liefeld’s remarks are part of a larger fallout with Marvel that has intensified in recent months. His frustrations began after feeling snubbed from the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere afterparty and perceived disrespect from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Since then, he’s openly severed ties with the studio and has increasingly criticised their creative decisions.
Despite Liefeld’s hardened stance, industry observers emphasise that he is entitled to his personal opinion, but it contrasts sharply with much of the critical response to the film. Liefeld’s bitterness stems from personal grievances with Marvel more than the creative merits of the film. Though he claimed low attendance and poor pacing, other critics have praised the movie’s aesthetic, tone, and character portrayals. His perspective highlights a rare creator vs. studio narrative, particularly ironic given Deadpool’s origins outside the mainstream Marvel system.
Rob Liefeld’s biting critique of Fantastic Four: First Steps, labeling it “impossibly dull & boring”, represents an ongoing rift between him and Marvel Studios. While the film has earned both box office success and strong critical reception, Liefeld remains unconvinced. Whether his harsh words ripple beyond his personal dispute into broader fan or industry opinion remains to be seen.
