The Leading Man: John Cena & Kevin Hart Team Up for New Netflix Comedy

You know how sometimes Hollywood decides you really need to see two mega-talented, totally mismatched stars bounce off each other for maximum laughs and action? Well, Netflix just delivered. John Cena and Kevin Hart are set to star in, and produce, The Leading Man, a brand-new action-comedy based on the wildly fun Oni Press graphic novel by B. Clay Moore and Jeremy Haun reported screen rant.

Cena plays a privileged, self-obsessed movie star much like when red carpet glamour meets all-star ego, who has no idea his trusty “man in the chair” (Hart) is actually a real-life secret agent. Cue the ultimate reality check: in this high-stakes game, you can’t fake being a hero, you’ve gotta earn it. And yes, the truth bombs start dropping fast.

The script comes courtesy of brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber (you might know them from The Meg and Red), and this is part of Hart’s growing Netflix universe. He’s producing through Hartbeat Productions, alongside a powerhouse lineup including Luke Kelly-Clyne, Bryan Smiley, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Eric Gitter, Peter Schwerin, Cena himself, and Dan Baime

Well, they’ve already proved lightning strikes, remember Die Hart? That dynamic of Cena’s stoic physicality and Hart’s rapid-fire wit was comedy gold. Hart brings the wisecracks and nervous energy, while Cena brings the brawn, and secretly, the charm. Together? They’re goofy, explosive, and totally bingeable.

Netflix is clearly leaning into big-budget, star-powered action comedies. With both names attached, The Leading Man instantly climbs the hype ladder. Add in a comic-book origin, espionage thrills, and the promise of belly laughs, and across a global streamer? It’s basically a recipe for “play it again, please” territory.

This is not just another action movie. There’s genuine heart and comedy in the meta-lesson that being a star isn’t enough, you’ve gotta do the hero work. With Hart’s Netflix track record (72 Hours, Me Time, The Man from Toronto), he knows the platform (and the audience) like the back of his hand. And Cena’s recent success (Heads of State) shows he can anchor a whole global audience.

Looks like this is one buddy comedy that’s already flexing serious star power. And if I’ve learned anything, it’s that when Cena and Hart are involved, you can bet it’s gonna be ridiculously entertaining.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
