Elon Musk vs Sam Altman: Apple App Store Bias Claims Spark Billionaire AI Showdown

Once upon a time, Elon Musk and Sam Altman were on the same team, co-founding OpenAI in 2015 to make AI safe and useful for humanity. Fast forward to 2025, and they’re taking public swings at each other like it’s a season finale cliffhanger.

In the latest flare-up, Musk accused Apple of playing favourites with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the App Store rankings, calling it an antitrust violation. Altman, never one to miss an opportunity, clapped back by pointing out Musk’s alleged history of tweaking X’s algorithm to boost his own content and bury rivals.

The Allegations: Apple in the Crosshairs

Musk’s gripe is that Apple has integrated ChatGPT into its services and placed it front-and-centre in the App Store’s “Must-Have” section — while mysteriously leaving his AI chatbot Grok out in the cold. In Musk’s view, that’s not just bad for competition, it’s a straight-up barrier to market access.

Apple insists its ranking system is fair, and data shows other AI tools like DeepSeek and Perplexity have topped the charts. Still, Musk’s claims have reignited debates about Big Tech’s gatekeeping power and whether app stores need stricter oversight.

    Altman Fires Back

Altman didn’t mince his words. He called Musk’s accusations “remarkable” and reminded the world that Musk himself has been accused of stacking the deck on X. Then, with the precision of a meme lord, he dismissed Grok’s struggles as a “skill issue — or bots.” The internet, predictably, ran with it.

Adding fuel to the fire, Grok — Musk’s own chatbot — apparently sided with Altman in the spat, while ChatGPT threw shade in Musk’s direction. Honestly, you can’t make this stuff up.

The Bigger Picture: This Isn’t Just About Ego

Sure, the social media barbs are entertaining, but there’s a bigger narrative here:

    1. Platform Power – Whoever controls the distribution channels (like the App Store) can shape the AI market in ways that make or break entire products.
    2. Algorithm Transparency – Altman’s jab about Musk’s algorithm meddling isn’t just a dunk; it’s a reminder that AI visibility is rarely neutral.
    3. Brand Wars – Altman is steering OpenAI toward a sleek, design-driven future (with Jony Ive in the mix), while Musk is positioning himself as the anti-establishment disruptor.
    4. The AI Arms Race – Both xAI and OpenAI are expanding aggressively — Musk with infrastructure, Altman with billion-dollar funding rounds and new hardware.

    Why You Should Care

If you’re in tech, AI, or just like watching billionaires throw shade, this feud is worth tracking. It’s a preview of how competition in the AI era will play out: not just in code and capabilities, but in distribution deals, public perception, and the politics of platforms.

And as we’ve learned, in the age of AI, even the bots have opinions.
