Guillermo del Toro’s long-anticipated adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is finally set to hit select cinemas on October 17, 2025, ahead of its Netflix debut on November 7 per Empire. This marks a significant shift from the film’s original streaming-only release plan, highlighting del Toro’s enduring belief in the irreplaceable experience of seeing a movie on the big screen.

The film features an impressive ensemble cast, with Oscar Isaac taking on the role of Dr. Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi portraying The Creature, and Mia Goth as Elizabeth. Supporting roles include Ralph Ineson, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, and Lars Mikkelsen, promising a powerhouse of performances to bring Shelley’s Gothic tale vividly to life.

Del Toro has described his adaptation as both faithful and visually spectacular, blending intricate set designs, period-accurate costumes, and his signature flair for atmospheric storytelling. Fans can expect a story that balances horror, emotion, and philosophical exploration, themes central to the original novel.

For cinephiles, the October theatrical release presents a rare opportunity to experience the film in its full cinematic glory before it arrives on streaming platforms. Del Toro has repeatedly emphasised that Frankenstein was crafted with the big screen in mind, making the theatrical experience essential to fully appreciate the film’s artistry and scale.

Guillermo del Toro is widely recognised for his mastery of dark fantasy and horror, with a career defined by visually striking films that explore monsters, human nature, and moral complexity. His previous works, such as Pan’s Labyrinthand Crimson Peak, earned critical acclaim for their rich storytelling and immersive worlds, blending fairy-tale aesthetics with chilling horror.

Del Toro also has experience reimagining classic stories and monsters. In The Shape of Water, he crafted a fresh take on the romantic monster genre, earning an Academy Award for Best Director. His fascination with creatures, Gothic imagery, and the intersection of horror and beauty makes him a perfect fit to tackle Mary Shelley’s iconic tale of science, ambition, and humanity’s darker impulses.

With del Toro at the helm and a stellar cast, Frankenstein is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most anticipated films. From its haunting visuals to its complex characters, this adaptation promises to be a cinematic event not to be missed.
