Netflix’s latest political thriller, A House of Dynamite, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring Idris Elba alongside Rebecca Ferguson, has opened to strong critical acclaim. The film currently holds an impressive 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, signalling a critically endorsed debut.
The film centres on a devastating scenario. An unidentified missile is launched toward the United States, triggering an urgent, multi-layered government response. The story unfolds in real time, offering multiple perspectives, from the White House and military command centres to the President himself which deepens the narrative’s urgency.
Kathryn Bigelow, returning to feature filmmaking after her 2017 drama Detroit, situates this thriller within her acclaimed legacy of politically charged films like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. She describes A House of Dynamite as a “cautionary tale” in an era dangerously complacent about nuclear threats.
Ferguson plays a pivotal role, often described as a high-ranking U.S. military or government official, holding the narrative together as tensions escalate. Idris Elba portrays the U.S. President, while Rebecca Ferguson delivers a performance marked by composure unraveling under pressure. The cast also includes Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Greta Lee amongst others.
The film premiered on September 2, 2025, at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, competing for the Golden Lion. Audiences can expect a limited theatrical release in the UK from October 3 and broader global theatres from October 10, 2025. Netflix streaming access begins on October 24.
Early critics liken the film’s pace and style to a high-octane real-time thriller with GQ calling it “completely f***ing terrifying” and praising its immersive technical execution, while others have highlighted its adrenaline-charged cinematography. A House of Dynamite launches with a strong critical foundation, underscored by an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score and Bigelow’s return to high-stakes political storytelling.
