Mega Evolution Pokémon ex Return in New Pokémon TCG Expansion

If you thought you’d seen it all in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, think again. On October 10, 2025, South African Pokémon fans (and the rest of the world, too) get to unwrap Pokémon Mega Evolution, the first expansion in the brand new Mega Evolution Series.

This set is bringing back the Mega Evolution Pokémon, and making them bigger, bolder, and, yes, more exciting than ever. Here’s why this expansion isn’t just another booster pack drop.

What’s so Mega about Mega Evolution? you may ask as these powerful beasts first showed up in the XY Series and made waves, but since then? They’ve been kinda quiet. The last time was in the Sun & Moon Series. Well now they’re back: think Mega Lucario ex, Mega Gardevoir ex and others.

Mega Evolution Pokémon ex are beefed up: more HP, more attack damage. But here’s the twist, they only cost three Prize cards when knocked out. That’s a big deal, especially for players who always feel the sting of losing big when their high-power cards go down.

Also, in a smart move, they won’t always need an extra Evolution step: some will appear as Basic, Stage 1, or Stage 2 Pokémon. That flexibility alone could change how decks are built.

    Collectors, this one’s for you:

    • Ultra rare “Mega Evolution Pokémon ex” cards will get a fresh art treatment. Each features a silhouette of the regular version of that Pokémon alongside its Mega Evolution form. Cool visual riff.
    • The expansion will also widen the ultra rare category. Item, Stadium, and Pokémon Tool cards will get ultra rare versions. That means rarity isn’t just confined to “Pokémon” or “Supporter” cards anymore.

Here’s the loot list of the Mega Evolution set :

    • Over 180 cards, including secret rares.
    • 10 Mega Evolution Pokémon ex which casual and competitive players alike are going to want to get their hands on all of them.
    • More than 15 Trainer cards for your support and strategy staples.
    • 22 full art Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and Trainer cards, these are the eye-catchers.
    • 22 Illustration Rare Pokémon, for those who love striking artwork.
    • 10 special illustration rare Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and Supporter cards.

And of course, you’ll find these in booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, and collections at participating retailers across South Africa.

The Mega Evolution set has something for everyone:

For collectors: New art styles + ultra rare tools = rare eye candy. These are cards you’ll want to frame, trade, or show off.

For competitive players: The tweaks in rules (like less evolution steps and fewer Prize cards when knocked out) open up deck-building possibilities. Could throw meta balance a bit, for better or worse.

For casual players & newcomers: It’s a fun “re-introduction” of Mega Evolutions without too many barriers. If you’ve never played Mega cards much, this gives you a solid entry point.

For the TCG universe as a whole: It underscores how Pokémon continues to evolve (no pun intended), keeping things fresh. Re-using and updating past mechanics (Mega Evolutions) is nostalgic but also signals creativity in design.

So don’t forget to mark your calendars, October 10 is when “Mega Evolution” drops in South Africa, and it looks like it’ll be one of the most talked-about expansions in a while. Whether you’re chasing those ultra rare cards, building a next-level deck, or just want to catch ‘em all, this seems like one big leap forward for the Pokémon TCG.
