Listen up, all you Netflix bingers, there is a surprise in store for you. Netflix has just announced that they are moving ahead with a new Luther feature film. Yes, that’s right, Idris Elba, is officially stepping back into the shadows for a second Luther feature film. Only this time he has company. Longtime collaborators Dermot Crowley return as the ever grounded Martin Schenk. Wait for it, ….. the biggest news? Ruth Wilson is coming back as Alice Morgan, the wickedly intelligent character who’s been unforgettable since the show’s early days. Alice has never been just another antagonist. Her unpredictable genius and complicated relationship with Luther shaped some of the series’ most electric moments. The psychological chess match between these two characters became the emotional backbone of the original show, and her return hints at more of that razor-sharp tension.

The film follows on from 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun and reunites much of the creative force that shaped the original series. Director Jamie Payne and creator and writer Neil Cross both make a return, ensuring the story remains steeped in the moral murk and psychological tension fans expect.

“Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me. They’re family,” says Cross. “I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them, and what kind of horrors might be brewing in London while Luther’s not around.

So we decided to come back together and find out what happens next.”

The next chapter in the Luther universe centres on a violent murder spree that only Luther is equipped to unravel. And as always, the cost of stepping back into that world may be higher than ever.

What’s Next for the Luther Movie

Plot details remain under wraps, but reports suggest that Luther is quietly pulled back into action, when a series of savage and seemingly random killings grips London. The problem? Danger surrounds him from every direction. Allies are scarce, enemies are everywhere, and saving the city may mean confronting forces that would rather see him buried than redeemed.

For Payne, returning to this world feels both familiar and exhilarating. “Neil has once again crafted a beautifully dark story that brings us all back together,” he says. “It’s a real pleasure to return to the streets of Lutherland with the immense talents of Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. And I’m especially excited to reunite with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinary Ruth Wilson. New viewers and longtime fans are in for something special.”

    Cast And Crew

Chernin Entertainment produces the film alongside Neil Cross, Idris Elba, and Gina Carter for 22Summers, with Tim Lewis also serving as producer.

Elba, Crowley, and Wilson are all confirmed to return. They’re joined by Stephen Dillane (The Outrun), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Kyle Soller (Andor), Ian Hart (The Mosquito Coast), and Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves). More casting details are expected as the investigation unfolds, so consider this case very much still open.

    Why It Matters

Luther was never just about solving cases. It’s always been a deep dive into obsession, moral compromise, and the toll that darkness takes on even the sharpest minds. Bringing back both Elba and Wilson shows a commitment to exploring those complex themes all over again. For viewers who’ve followed Luther’s journey from BBC to Netflix, this reunion offers a chance to experience one of television’s most compelling partnerships once more.
