The yellow chaos returns, sooner than expected
The dungaree-wearing yellow henchmen of Gru are back with a new trailer for the third film in the Minions franchise, offering the first real glimpse at what the mischievous characters will be up to next.
Release Date Moved Up a Year
Illumination shifted the animated film from its original June 30, 2027 release to July 1, 2026.The shift places it alongside another major animated return, with Shrek 5 slated to arrive later that year on December 23, 2026. The date change signals Illumination’s confidence in the enduring appeal of its smallest stars.
Meta Mayhem on Set
The trailer openins with a familiar piece of Minions slapstick. One of the characters charges straight toward the camera before collapsing in exhaustion, a breathless gag that sets the tone before quickly cutting to chaos. While the clip is short, it gives audiences their first sense of the story for the third film, officially titled Minions & Monsters.
In the footage, the Minions appear to be acting in a movie themselves, staging an elaborate battle scene. Things escalate when they take their roles too seriously and begin attacking and biting the warrior actors for real, blurring the line between performance and pandemonium. The meta setup leans into the franchise’s long running reliance on physical comedy and escalating absurdity.
Star-Studded Franchise History
The Minions franchise began in 2015 with a standalone film that featured the voices of Sandra Bullock as villain inventor Scarlet Overkill and Jon Hamm as her husband Herb. The cast also included Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan and Jennifer Saunders, alongside Steve Carell as Gru. Pierre Coffin, who has voiced the Minions since their debut in Despicable Me in 2010, once again provided their distinctive gibberish language.
