HONOR has officially lifted the curtain on the HONOR Magic8 Pro, and this one is clearly aimed at South Africans who live on their phones long after the sun goes down. Landing in stores on 1 March 2026 at R27,999, the Magic8 Pro is positioning itself as a flagship built around AI, photography and endurance rather than chasing spec-sheet bragging rights alone.
On paper, it looks like one of HONOR’s most confident devices yet.
Night photography is the headline act
The star of the show is the 200MP AI Ultra Night Telephoto Camera, which HONOR is boldly framing as “perfect night photography”. Marketing language aside, the focus here is clear: long-distance shots, low light and portraits that do not turn faces into oil paintings after sunset.
HONOR’s AI Ultra Night Portrait mode is designed to keep skin tones natural while managing harsh background lighting, a common problem in city night shots. Add up to 100x AI Super Zoom, and the Magic8 Pro is clearly built for concerts, sports matches and cityscapes under floodlights.
What stands out is how deliberately local the storytelling is. HONOR is talking about stadium lights in Soweto, night markets in Durban and rooftop gatherings in Sandton, trying to really connect with how and where South Africans use their phones.
On the editing side, HONOR is pushing its Magic Color engine, an AI-driven cinematic colour system that lets users apply preset looks or replicate reference styles. Features like AI Moving Photo have also been upgraded with better stabilisation and creative modes like motion trails and slow motion. This is clearly aimed at creators who want shareable content without spending time in third-party apps.

AI that tries to be useful, not flashy
AI is everywhere in 2026, but HONOR is pitching a more practical approach. A dedicated AI Button gives quick access to smart tools, shortcuts and workflows. Less digging through menus and more immediate action.
The Magic8 Pro is also integrated with Google Gemini, bringing features like visual recognition, summarising, content generation and translations directly into everyday apps such as Gmail, Docs and Chrome.
One genuinely interesting addition is AI Deepfake Detection, which offers real-time alerts during calls and video interactions. Scams and impersonation are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent than ever before, so this is a really uselfull take on AI implementation.
Performance built for long days and longer nights
Under the hood, the Magic8 Pro runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, promising smooth multitasking, stable gaming and AI-optimised efficiency. HONOR is clearly targeting users who bounce between work, content creation and gaming without wanting to babysit their battery.
Speaking of batteries, the 7100mAh silicon-carbon battery is one of the largest we have seen in a mainstream flagship, aside from the 7500mAh battery that the OPPO Find 9 Pro is packing. Combined with 100W wired and 80W wireless HONOR SuperCharge, this phone is built to shrug off long commutes, late-night streaming and heavy camera use.
HONOR’s MagicOS 10 also leans into cross-platform life, offering easier file and note sharing across Android, iOS, Windows and Mac. It is an open approach that mirrors how people actually use tech rather than locking them into a single ecosystem.
Design, price and local positioning
The Magic8 Pro arrives in a single Sunrise Gold colourway, inspired by early African mornings according to HONOR’s marketing messaging. In real life, it is subtle, looks and feels premium and clearly aimed at standing out without making too much of a fuss.
At R27,999, it sits firmly in flagship territory and puts it up against devices that have historically dominated this price band. However it comes in cheaper than last years Magic 7 Pro and HONOR deserves praise here considering the general industry price increases due to chipset shortages.

The Geekhub take
Look, night photography, great battery life, fast charging and practical AI are not revolutionary ideas, but they are the ones that impact daily experience most.
If HONOR delivers on its camera promises and keeps MagicOS smooth and reliable, the Magic8 Pro could be one of the most well-rounded Android flagships South Africans see this year. We will have full impressions once it lands in our hands, but HONOR is certainly making a strong case here.
