Every year on February 27, fans around the world celebrate Pokémon Day. This year, the brand is 30 years old, and the love for Pikachu and friends is as strong as ever.

Three decades after its debut, Pokémon remains one of the most powerful cultural forces in global entertainment, and in South Africa, the hobby is growing along with a community bursting with curiosity for what’s coming next.

The Pokémon brand and Trading Card Game (TCG) continues to build communities that span generations. What began as a childhood hobby for many has evolved into a lifelong connection, one that blends art, strategy, collectability and social interaction.

“Pokémon is one of those franchises that keeps getting it right in terms of new releases. It can be played by kids, teens and adults and I think this is part of its appeal,” says Philip Galliford, spokesperson for Solarpop, the South African distributor of Pokémon merchandise and TCGs.

Pokémon cards are more than childhood collectibles, and over the years they’ve earned their stripes as cultural artefacts and serious investment assets. In the past two decades, rare Pokémon cards have delivered remarkable returns, attracting not only collectors but also high-net-worth investors.

For the TCG community, the heart of Pokémon remains unchanged. Local game stores across South Africa host regular tournaments, pre-release events and community meet-ups where players of all ages gather to trade and compete. As the franchise marks its 30th birthday, Pokémon stands at a unique intersection of past and future as it blends innovation with nostalgia, collectability with playability, and global hype with wonderful memories.

“Thirty years in, Pokémon continues to innovate while honouring what made people become loyal fans in the first place. That balance is part of the reason for its popularity and why the community keeps growing.”

From booster packs to billion-dollar headlines, Pokémon’s legacy has ensured that it’s more than a trend. It’s a multi-generational movement that encourages fans and newcomers to train on!
