South Africa – I am Privileged to call you home

As I say a prayer for this fractured world, full of destruction and despair I can’t help but ponder on how privileged and grateful I am – how privileged we all are – to call South Africa home. We always talk about our various challenges and there are indeed many, such as  socio-economic challenges, structural issues and vast inequality. We often hear stats about how many people are leaving this country and how many more intend to do so because there’s just no hope anymore. Despite all of this, I can’t help but feel there is an undeniable privilege in being South African.

South Africa is often referred to as the “Rainbow Nation,” a moniker that encapsulates its rich diversity. Our culture is a beautiful mosaic, woven from the threads of numerous ethnic groups and languages. From the rhythmic beats of traditional dances ,the vibrant colors of our art, to the aroma of an authentic Durban “ Bunny Chow, every corner of our country tells a story. This cultural richness fosters unity, as we learn from each other’s histories and traditions.

The spirit of Ubuntu—“I am because we are”—is deeply embedded in our social fabric, encouraging compassion and solidarity. This ethos manifests in our communities, where acts of kindness and support can often be found amidst hardship. We may disagree on many things, but we  South Africans have a remarkable ability to rally together, whether to celebrate a cultural festival, support a local initiative, or stand in solidarity during challenging times.

In a world increasingly threatened by environmental degradation, man made destruction and the general loss of care for nature in favour of high streets and cities being transformed into extravagant shopping malls, our nations stunning natural beauty is unparalleled- from the majestic Drakensberg Mountains to the vast expanse of the Karoo. The joy of sharing a sunset over the ocean or hiking through our lush landscapes, connects us to our homeland in profound ways.

While it is true that we  grapple with major economic challenges, South Africa offers a relatively low cost of living compared to many countries worldwide. This affordability opens doors to opportunity and entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. It is the nation where a shopkeepers son can ascend to the highest echelons of the business world and also contribute to the development of society, as is the case with one of the greatest leaders of our time, ( Chairman of The Eskom Board ) Mteto Nyati. This is not just an individual triumph but a reflection of the broader South African narrative. Another great example of visionary leaders who harness their experience to inspire change and drive economic growth, is Jorge Mendes, a call centre agent who became the CEO of CellC. Their dedication to nurturing talent and creating sustainable enterprises exemplifies the potential for progress within our society.

The landscape of South African business is evolving, with young entrepreneurs emerging and reshaping industries. The spirit of innovation and determination thrives in our cities and townships, as people from all walks of life harness their creativity to forge paths toward success.

While the world is at war with unspeakable amounts of injustice and human suffering, our Constitution  provides a foundation for  protecting our political and religious liberties. The commitment to equality, dignity, and justice echoes through our institutions, reminding us that while we have work to do, we are equipped with the tools to effect change. Our vibrant civil society and active citizenry exemplify the power of collective action. South Africans are not afraid to voice their opinions, advocate for their rights, and challenge injustices, embodying the very essence of a democracy that values participation.

Yes, South Africa has loads of issues, some may argue far too many. But in a world filled with uncertainty, we have every reason to be optimistic. I would go as far as saying even grateful. We are a nation that has faced adversity, yet we continue to rise, learn, and grow. The spirit of hope thrives in our communities, and the journey towards a better future is paved with our collective efforts. There is no better feeling than the spirit of unity and joy , when we watch South Africans from all walks of life celebrating the Boks bringing the World Cup home. This is the South Africa I love, this is the South Africa I’m proud to call home.

Indeed, South Africa is not just a place on the map; it is a tapestry of life, love, and resilience. As we navigate the complexities of our society, let us hold on to the belief that together, we can create a brighter tomorrow. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Let’s embrace this journey together, forging a path that inspires future generations to love and cherish this land as deeply as we do.
