WhatsApp is practically glued to our fingertips amplifying the risk for misinformation. We’ve all been there: you receive a questionable image on WhatsApp, and you’re left wondering if it’s genuine or just another internet hoax. Well, WhatsApps getting a clever new upgrade. Soon, you’ll be able to fact-check images with the help of Google’s reverse image search, all without leaving the app.
How it Works
Spotted by the eagle-eyed team at WABetaInfo, this new feature is currently being tested in the beta version of WhatsApp. When viewing an image, you’ll soon find a “search on web” option in the three-dot menu. Tap it, and the image will be sent directly to Google Search, where you can check its origins against similar images and verify its authenticity.
WhatsApp has assured users that the image will only be shared with Google, for the particular search query so you don’t have to worry about your images being shared with Meta or other third parties.
While reverse image search has been available through Google Lens, this direct integration into WhatsApp makes it even more convenient. There’s no need to save images and upload them separately; now you can fact-check them with a single tap.
This feature is currently rolling out to beta testers, and it’s expected to be available to the public soon. This server-side update means not all beta users have access yet, but it’s likely just a matter of time before it reaches everyone.
I am generally extremely cautious of any content shared on social media, so this new addition is a welcome tool in the fight against fake news and misinformation.
