Netflix is about to unleash a new South African dark comedy, “Mabaso’s Family Reunion,” and it’s packed with some of the country’s top acting talent, including a familiar face that’s sure to bring the laughs.  Premiering on November 23rd, the series stars veteran actor Jerry Mofokeng, Bonko Khoza, who’s been earning rave reviews for his roles in shows like “Heart of the Hunter” and “Red Ink,” and none other than the legendary Alfred Ntombela.

A Family Affair, with a Twist

The show revolves around four siblings who return to their hometown to bury their deceased mother. But things take a chaotic turn when they discover a mysterious box on the day of the funeral, leading to a life-altering surprise.

A Stellar Cast

Alongside Mofokeng, Khoza, and Ntombela, who’s known for his comedic roles in Leon Schuster movies, the series features a talented ensemble cast, including Natasha Thahane from “Blood & Water,” Lerato Mvelase, and Thulani Mtsweni. It’s a lineup that’s sure to draw attention and spark conversations.

Black Brain Pictures: A Powerhouse of Production

“The Mabaso’s Family Reunion” is produced by the award-winning Black Brain Pictures, the production house behind shows like “DiepCity” and “Isitha: The Enemy.”  Mandla N, the legendary executive creative director and film producer, is at the helm.

In an interesting twist, Black Brain Pictures has opted for a licensing agreement with Netflix rather than selling the show outright. This allows them to retain ownership of the project and potentially license it to other broadcasters in the future.

“This is the year of ownership,” Mandla N told “Sunday World.” “We are moving away from a model that seeks to take and own our hard work. Our main focus right now is to license our work.”

This approach gives Black Brain Pictures greater control over their creative output and allows them to explore new avenues for distribution and monetization.

Tune in to Netflix on November 23rd to see what unfolds when this family reunites under unusual circumstances.
