HONOR’s AI Upscale Brings Old Trafford’s History into the 21st Century

As an Arsenal fan, it was painful writing this article, but I guess not as painful as watching my beloved team bottle the league title yet again. For now, lets give the red side of Manchester something to smile about. HONOR is flexing its AI muscles and this time, they’re tackling 115 years of football history. Thanks to Qualcomm’s sponsorship of Manchester United, the brand has used the HONOR Magic7 Pro’s AI Upscale feature to breathe new life into historic photos of Old Trafford, taking grainy images from 1910 to 2025 with AI-powered clarity.

The result is truly impressive – 40+ restored images, sharpened, de-scratched, and enhanced by AI, turning faded relics into crisp snapshots of football’s past. It’s a fusion of technolgy and sports nostalgia, but does it signal a new era for AI-driven image restoration, or is it just a high-tech PR stunt?

AI Upscaling: More Than Just a Fancy Filter?

The HONOR Magic7 Pro, powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite, is already packed with AI photography features—AI Super Zoom, AI Enhanced Portrait, and AI Motion Sensing Capture—but the real star here is AI Upscale.

This feature isn’t just a simple sharpening tool. It removes scratches, restores faded details, and enhances resolution to bring old photos back to life. For Manchester United fans, that means seeing Old Trafford’s history in a way that’s never been possible before—details that were once lost in time are now brought to life.

Jason Leach, Manchester United’s club historian, summed it up:

“It’s like stepping back in time. Some details that were lost to time are now visible, bringing the atmosphere of that first game in 1910 to life for modern fans.”

Tech Meets Tradition: HONOR’s Play for Cultural Heritage

According to HONOR’s Chief Imaging Architect, Wei Luo, this isn’t just about Manchester United:

“The HONOR Magic7 Pro’s AI Upscale isn’t just about improving photos—it’s about connecting people with magic moments from the past.”

That’s a big claim, but it raises an interesting question—could AI Upscale be the future of historical preservation? It may be used to glorify Manchester United’s legacy today, but the potential applications go way beyond football. Restoring old family photos, reviving cultural artifacts, even preserving historical documents—this could be a real game changer.

The Bigger Picture: Qualcomm’s AI-Driven Photography Push

HONOR isn’t doing this alone though—this entire project is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, which brings on-device generative AI capabilities to mobile photography.

Judd Heape, VP of Product Management at Qualcomm, had this to say:

“Our advanced AI ISP enables powerful, AI-driven photography features that make it easy for users to capture and preserve life’s most memorable moments.”

That’s the key takeaway here—this isn’t just a once off marketing stunt. It’s part of a larger push to integrate AI-driven enhancements into everyday photography.

    Marketing Move or Meaningful Innovation?

There’s no doubt that AI Upscale is impressive. Seeing Old Trafford’s history through AI-enhanced clarity is undeniably cool, even if they chose the wrong football club. What it does is, it highlights a real-world application of AI that goes beyond standard smartphone gimmicks.

But it’s certainly also a high-profile marketing play. Qualcomm gets to showcase its AI-powered Snapdragon 8 Elite, HONOR gets to highlight its imaging prowess, and Manchester United fans get a nostalgia-fueled trip down memory lane.

Still, if this tech proves to be more than just a one-off feature, we could be looking at the next big leap in AI-enhanced digital preservation. Whether you’re a football fan or a photography enthusiast, you have to appreciate the progress being made here.
