Huawei Just Flipped the Script on African Logistics with a Smart Warehouse

Will Meng, CEO of Huawei South Africa

It’s easy to throw around buzzwords like “smart”, “green”, and “future-ready”. But Huawei South Africa just gave those labels some serious teeth with the launch of its new 14,000 square metre smart warehouse in Johannesburg.

This isn’t some tech-for-tech’s-sake showcase. It’s a strategic investment that significantly enhances efficiency, safety, and sustainability, redefining what modern warehousing can look like in Africa.

According to Will Meng, CEO of Huawei South Africa, the local warehouse and logistics sector is no small fry—it was worth $93 billion in 2024 and could hit $157 billion by 2032. That kind of growth demands more than forklifts and floor space. It needs smart, agile, tech-powered infrastructure. “This is about building supply chains that are faster, leaner, and smarter,” said Meng.

    What Powers the Smart Warehouse?

The magic behind the scenes comes down to Huawei’s GEM approach—Green Power, E-Security, and Modern Logistics. It represents a strategic investment aimed at transforming Africa’s supply chain landscape through intelligent, automated systems. Sounds great, but here’s what it actually looks like in practice:

Green Power That Pays for Itself:

Forget Eskom dependency. This facility runs on a 150KWp solar setup per building, juiced by Huawei’s own SUN2000-100KTL-M2 inverters. That covers around 90% of daytime energy needs—and any excess power? It can be pushed back into the grid for extra ROI. “Today’s businesses need a power plan that protects revenue,” said Herman Fourie, Senior Solutions Manager at Huawei Digital Power. This one does.

    E-Security That Sees Everything, Always:

We’re talking full-colour, full-coverage, AI-enabled cameras that don’t blink. No need for massive control rooms or teams glued to screens—Huawei’s optical backbone links everything together in real-time. Whether it’s a safety issue or a security breach, the system sees it before humans would.

Modern Logistics That Moves at Warp Speed:

Automated Guided Forklifts (AGF) in operation

Warehouse pickers now work alongside Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Forklifts (AGFs) that bring goods to them—flipping the old model on its head. Picking is paperless and powered by PDA scanners. The result? Human pickers now process up to 110 lines per hour, nearly doubling traditional speeds. That’s more than just a tweak, thats redefining.

Under the Hood: AI, Automation, and Actual Results

Huawei’s warehouse automates 60% of daily operations and boosts overall efficiency by up to 80% compared to legacy setups. The crazy thing is, that’s not theory—that’s real throughput. “We designed this to push the limits of what’s possible in logistics,” said Stevin John Du Plessis, Huawei’s Logistics Manager, as he walked industry leaders through the tech stack.

York Ning, Director of Enterprise Marketing & Solutions, broke it down even further: “Our warehouse management system integrates AGVs and AGFs to allocate and schedule tasks intelligently.” The outcome? Productivity jumps by 37% per employee. That’s what happens when humans and machines actually collaborate.

    Why Partners Are Buying In

It’s not just a Huawei show. Africa Global Logistics has been a Huawei partner for 15 years—and now they’re doubling down. COO Fergus Fitch said the tech has helped streamline processes and drive operational excellence across the board. With 23,000+ employees in 50 countries, the company’s now planning a 35,000 sqm flagship campus in Africa—fully loaded with Huawei gear.

A Blueprint for Smarter Warehousing in Africa

Huawei’s vision goes beyond boxes and shelves. This facility is a blueprint for what logistics in Africa can look like when sustainability, security, and automation work hand in hand. Meng summed it up best: “We’re not just solving today’s problems—we’re designing for the future.”

The message is clear: if you’re still running a warehouse the old way, it’s already obsolete. Huawei didn’t just build a smarter facility—they raised the bar for the entire continent.
