Geeky Friday Tech Pick: SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

    SanDisk

So this one was recommended to me by journalist and fellow tech reviewer Nafisa Akabor on Recharged.co.za.  After reading her take, I sent her a text just to confirm a few things and then pulled the trigger on the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. A few months down the line, it’s been through the wringer — backups, media transfers, and even pulling double duty as a scratch disk for video editing. Guess what? It’s been holding up like a champ.

    Performance That Keeps Up

Let’s get straight to it: the speeds SanDisk promises actually delivers in real world usage. They claim 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write thanks to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. I’m consistently clocking around 900MB/s read and 850MB/s write. For context, that means transferring a 20GB video file in under 25 seconds.

This thing doesn’t choke when you throw large files at it, and that makes a massive difference when you’re dealing with backups or using it as a scratch disk for video projects. Whether you’re on Windows, macOS, Android, or even an iPhone  (iPhone 15 upwards), it just works.

    Built to Be Battered

SanDisk clearly knew this would be thrown around. It weighs just 55g, making it easy to slip into a pocket, but it’s built like it’s expecting a beating. The IP65 rating means it’s dustproof and can survive a bit of rain, and the rubberized coating makes it feel secure in hand. I’ve dropped it (intentionally, in the name of science) from about 3 meters onto concrete, and it just shrugged it off.

And yes, the integrated carabiner loop might sound like a gimmick, but when you’re hopping between shoots or co-working spaces, being able to clip it to your bag is surprisingly useful.

    Keeping Your Data Locked Down

If you’re storing anything sensitive, the built-in SanDisk Security software is a solid bonus. It’s got 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection. Setting it up was dead simple, no digging through complicated menus. Once it’s locked down, you can breathe easy knowing your data isn’t going walkabout if you misplace it.

How Much Space Do You Really Need?

     You’ve got options:

    • 500GB: Great for everyday files and light backups.
    • 1TB: Ideal for photographers or content creators with moderate storage needs.
    • 2TB: If you’re juggling multiple media projects, this is the sweet spot.
    • 4TB: Built for the serious pros dealing with 4K video libraries or massive data sets.

I went with the 500GB model, and it’s been more than enough for my workload, but if you’re neck-deep in video editing or need to archive raw footage, go bigger.

Where to Buy in South Africa

Availability and pricing are a bit all over the place, so keep an eye on these options:

    • Takealot: Usually has multiple capacities and the fastest delivery.
    • Orms Direct: Best for creatives; they know their storage tech.
    • Amazon South Africa: Sometimes cheaper
    • Incredible Connection: Regular Specials

Pro tip: Prices fluctuate, so if you spot a deal, don’t sleep on it.

    The Small Print: Reliability

Okay, full disclosure: while my experience has been rock solid, some users online have reported reliability issues after heavy use. It’s rare, but it’s out there. Recharged suggested these issues are limited to the Extreme Pro Models.

I would say if you’re buying this for mission-critical storage, maybe grab a second unit as a backup or look deeper into your options.

    Final Thoughts: Worth It? Absolutely.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is one of the first items I chuck into my backpack. It’s fast, tough, and reliable (so far). The occasional horror story about long-term durability is something to keep in mind, but for the speed and portability it delivers, I’d buy it again without blinking.
