    Galaxy Z Flip7 & Flip7 FE Hands-On: Samsung’s Smartest Pocket Phone Just Got Smarter

If the Galaxy Z Fold7 is Samsung’s power suit, the Galaxy Z Flip7 is its tailored blazer. Compact, confident, and quietly clever. Unveiled alongside its bigger sibling at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9, the Flip7 proves that small can be mighty, especially when it’s packed with Galaxy AI.

I went hands-on with the Flip7 and its new sibling, the Flip7 FE, at Samsung South Africa’s showcase in Johannesburg. Heres the details.

    FlexWindow, Fully Realised

The Flip’s signature feature, the FlexWindow, just graduated. It’s now 4.1 inches, edge to edge, and the brightest and most functional yet.

    • 2,600 nits peak brightness with Vision Booster keeps it usable outdoors
    • 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling smooth
    • You can now respond to messages, check schedules, control music, preview selfies, and even launch Gemini AI tasks without opening the phone

It’s not just a notification shade anymore. It’s an actual screen with real function. For someone on the go, it’s a huge quality-of-life boost.

    Bigger Inside, Tougher Outside

Despite all the upgrades, the Flip7 is the thinnest and lightest Galaxy Z Flip ever

    • Weighs just 188g
    • 13.7mm folded
    • Covered in Gorilla Glass Victus 2
    • Features a redesigned Armor FlexHinge
    • Reinforced with a tough Armor Aluminum frame

It slips into your pocket like it belongs there. I tossed it in and out of my jeans during the hands-on and there was no bulge or drag. It finally feels like something built for pockets, not product shots.

    Power That Goes the Distance

Samsung didn’t just shrink the phone. They beefed it up inside too.

    • 4,300mAh battery is the largest ever in a Flip
    • Promises up to 31 hours of video playback
    • Powered by a custom 3nm processor with significant CPU, GPU, and NPU gains
    • For the first time, Samsung DeX is supported on a Flip

Multiple apps running simultaneously , running editing tools, and switching between shouldn’t be a problem for this little powerhouse. This phone is small, but it’s ready for real work.

    AI That Actually Helps

The Flip7 doesn’t just have Galaxy AI. It’s built around it.

You can now use Gemini Live directly from the cover screen. Ask for flight details, restaurant suggestions, or calendar reminders. It pulls data from your apps and responds instantly.

    • Camera Sharing on Gemini Live lets you show the camera what you’re looking at and ask questions
    • Now Bar displays app info, ride statuses, music, and notifications
    • Now Brief offers daily summaries, fitness stats, weather, and personalized content

You can also fully customize your FlexWindow. Pick themes, widgets, wallpapers, clock styles. Even make the clock curve around your wallpaper image. It’s weirdly satisfying.

Selfies That Snap Like Studio Shots

Samsung put flagship-grade cameras on a flip phone. The 50MP wide lens and 12MP ultra-wide are fast, sharp, and tuned with AI.

    • Enhanced Nightography helps low-light shots shine
    • 10-bit HDR brings video to life
    • Real-Time Filters let you see the effect before snapping
    • Zoom Slider makes it easier to frame without unfolding
    • Dual Preview shows the photo on both screens so you and your subject can nail the shot
    • Portrait Studio adds stylized effects like cartoon, fisheye, or pro blur

And yes, you can do all of that without even flipping the phone open. I did.

Galaxy Z Flip7 FE: Foldables for More People

The Flip7 FE brings foldables to a wider audience. It keeps the essentials and trims the extras.

    • 6.7-inch main display
    • Same 50MP camera
    • Compact cover screen with Now Brief support
    • Runs One UI 8 with Android 16
    • Available in minimalist Black and White

It’s still smart, still foldable, and still loaded with Galaxy AI. It just costs less and focuses on the essentials.

South African Pricing and Preorder Offers

    Here’s the local pricing lineup:

    Galaxy Z Flip7

    • 256GB – R24,999
    • 512GB – R27,499

    Galaxy Z Flip7 FE

    • 128GB – R18,499
    • 256GB – R21,499

If you preorder between 10 and 31 July, Samsung will double your storage at no extra cost

    • Buy 256GB, get 512GB
    • Buy 128GB, get 256GB

    You’ll also get:

    • Samsung Care+ for repairs and accidental damage
    • 6 months of Google AI Pro
    • 2TB of free cloud storage

    Final Take

The Flip7 isn’t just a cute accessory anymore. It’s a capable, AI-powered, productivity-ready phone that fits in your palm and handles your life. The FlexWindow now actually earns its name, and with DeX, Gemini, and upgraded cameras, it proves that big upgrades can come in small packages.

The Flip7 FE, on the other hand, is the smart play for anyone ready to join the foldable future without maxing out a credit card. Same smart features, cleaner execution but at a lower price.

Yes these prices are still far from affordable for most, but they’re starting to move in the right direction.
