Review: vivo V60 Lite 5G. A Big Battery and Even Bigger Promises

Tech companies love to make promises. It is practically a sport at this point. So when vivo rolls in the V60 Lite 5G and starts talking about “huge battery life” and “great cameras”, my instinct is to, well not get too excited.

The reality however is a little more interesting. Maybe even a bit surprising.

The V60 Lite 5G lands on South African shelves at R12,999. That puts it squarely in the “I want something good but I refuse to sell an organ” category. It also puts pressure on vivo to actually justify why anyone should pay attention when consumers are counting every rand and every compromise.

The surprising part is that, they almost pull it off.

A Battery That Laughs at Your Anxiety

The best thing about this phone is the 6,500 mAh battery. vivo calls it a BlueVolt battery. Cute name. More importantly, it works. It is one of the largest batteries available in any mainstream device in the country and it shows. You can throw streaming, doomscrolling, WhatsApp groups, TikTok, and a GPS marathon at it and still have enough juice left to complain about Eskom on X. I consistently got 2 days of average use and no iPhone or Samsung can claim that.

It charges at 90 W too. That means you get from nearly dead to full in under an hour. vivo even tosses in a five year battery performance guarantee with its 7 Star Quality Promise. Yes, more promises. But it shows vivo really believes in their hardware. It kinda reminds of Chinese car brands offering unlimited mileage warranty.

The Cameras Are Better Than Expected. Mostly Because Expectations Were Low

The South African model gets the Sony IMX882 sensor. It is a 50 MP shooter that performs well in daylight and holds its own at night thanks to vivo’s Super Night Algorithm. You also get 4K video on both the front and rear. The AI Erase 3.0 feature is basically budget Photoshop for people who do not want to pretend they are not editing their photos.

Will it beat a flagship? Not a chance, that’s what the X200 Pro and upcoming X300 Pro are there for. But that is not the point. What matters is that the camera works. And it works consistently, without drama. That itself is a miracle in the mid range.

Durability That Means You Can Actually Use the Thing

Here is where vivo tries to stand out. The phone is MIL STD 810H certified. It is SGS tested. It is IP65 rated. In simple terms, It can survive what life throws at it.

We drop phones. They get shoved into handbags and back pockets. They scratch. This phone is built for that reality instead of pretending everyone lives in a gentle Instagram dream world.

I’ve used it for a few weeks without a case and it held up impressively. No visible scratches whatsoever. I haven’t dropped it though, so I’m not certain how it would fair then. Despite the durability claims, it still measures only 7.59 mm, making it quite the looker in this price point.

Where It Falters. And It Does

The MediaTek Dimensity 7360 Turbo chipset is fine. Just fine. It handles everyday tasks without breaking a sweat but it is not the processor for anyone who wants high performance or long term future proofing. It is the tech equivalent of someone who shows up to work on time but never achieves the best employee award.

The build uses materials that are more practical than premium. At R12,999, some buyers will expect glass and metal. Unfortunately they will not get it. vivo clearly prioritised durability and battery over luxurious feel.

Is that the right choice? It depends on whether your phone spends more time in your hand or bouncing around your car.

    The Bottom Line

The vivo V60 Lite 5G is not a revolution or a flagship killer. Infact overall, its not all that exciting. vivo has kept things simple. Deliver a phone that lasts long, charges fast, survives life, and takes decent photos without pretending to be something it is not.

The smartphone industry is full of slogans and imaginary innovation, so it’s great to see something so beautifully simple for a change.

If you want performance bragging rights, move along. If you want durability, battery life and reliability without overspending, this is one of the smarter mid range buys in South Africa right now.

vivo may not have changed the game. But they are definitely showing up to play it properly.
