OPPO threw a luxury brunch at the Park Hyatt in Sandton this morning to announce what it’s calling a new era of flagship smartphones in South Africa. That’s the kind of line we’ve all heard before. But the Find X9 Pro might actually have the goods to back it up.
This is OPPO’s first true flagship to hit South African shelves, the one meant to prove it can play in the same league as Samsung and Apple. And while most brands say that, few deliver.
Premium by Design
Let’s get this out of the way: the Find X9 Pro does look a bit like an iPhone and in some instances even behaves like one. But so do most flagships now. Everyone’s chasing the same aesthetic shorthand for “expensive.” The difference here is that OPPO has nailed the execution. The Titanium Charcoal finish, the razor-thin bezels, the matte aluminum frame, it all feels like something Apple might actually make if it still took design risks. The phone looks and feels ultra-premium, which is the point.
It’s also tough. The Find X9 Pro comes with IP66, IP68, and IP69 protection, which means it can survive dust, splashes, and South African weather in general. This is a device meant to be shown off, not babied.

The Hasselblad Effect
Cameras are where OPPO wants to plant its flag. The company partnered with Hasselblad, the legendary camera brand used by actual astronauts, to build a system around a 200 MP telephoto lens. The result is what OPPO calls the Hasselblad Master Camera System. Add the company’s new LUMO Image Engine, which handles tone and texture, and the camera performance might actually live up to the hype. The short hands-on time I had today, left me truly impressed.
There’s also 4K 120 fps Dolby Vision HDR and LOG recording, which are nice buzzwords until you realize they’re tools made for people who actually know how to shoot. Creators, not influencers.
Power to Spare
Under the hood, OPPO went with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 processor, a quiet shot across Qualcomm’s bow. The phone runs ColorOS 16, OPPO’s latest take on Android, and comes with a handful of AI tricks that actually sound useful: AI Mind Space for memory summarisation, AI Recorder for automated notes, and AI Portrait Glow for better low-light shots.
Then there’s the 7,500 mAh silicon-carbon battery, the biggest ever in an OPPO flagship. It’s built to last five years while keeping over 80 percent capacity. That’s a bold claim. Charging speeds are equally aggressive, with 80 W wiredand 50 W wireless options. Translation: you’ll never be that person begging for a plug point at a café again.
The Price of Entry
The Find X9 Pro will sell exclusively through Vodacom for R 29 999, or on contract from R 1 399 per month, available from Friday 7 November. You get 16 GB RAM (expandable to 28 GB) and 512 GB storage, which is flagship territory. Early buyers also get a massive OPPO Gift Box with chargers, a magnetic case, the OPPO Watch X2, and a VIP Care package. It’s the kind of bundle that screams, “Please notice us,” but it works.
The Takeaway
The Find X9 Pro isn’t pretending to be disruptive. It’s making a statement that OPPO can build a serious flagship. It looks like an iPhone, performs like a powerhouse, and feels like the brand finally understands what premium actually means.
Samsung and Apple should probably pay attention. OPPO isn’t coming for the middle of the market anymore. It’s coming for the throne.
