King Conan In The Making After 40 Years

King Conan finally moves forward with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning

Arnold Schwarzenegger the man who made the line “I’ll be back” famous and dominated movie screens during the ’80s and early ’90s. Back then Arnold was a household name. His roles included fighting predators in the jungle, and marching into battle with a giant sword strapped to his back. But for many fans, Conan the Barbarian remains one of the roles that defined that era completely. His last major live-action movie was released in 2019, when he starred as the T-800 in Terminator: Dark Fate and had a role in the fantasy film Iron Mask.

If you are one of those that saw the original 1982 Conan the Barbarian, you will have no problem in remembering the raw brutality of it. It carried a gritty fantasy energy which modern CGI-heavy blockbusters are struggling to compete with. There was no need for massive dialogue. Arnold had something that most mother’s use as weapons, the stare which does most of the work. And together with Basil Poledouris and John Milius’ you had a fantasy classic that still holds weight decades later. So if you’ve missed that version of Arnold, you will be happy to note that, after more than 40 years, Arnold is finally preparing to step back into the world of Conan once again.

The Hollywood Reporter has it, that the long-awaited sequel King Conan is officially in process, with Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie set to direct. Arnold himself recently confirmed that filming is expected to begin in 2027. I know, at this point you feel like you have to pinch yourself right? Cos this whole thing just feels too surreal. There have been whispers about a Conan return for years, all with different versions. Scripts disappeared into development limbo. And if you can remember, at one stage there was even a  project called The Legend of Conan. And because nothing materialised from those whispers, this now kinda feels unbelievable.

But there’s no time like the present to make a comeback. Although Arnold will no longer be the unstoppable barbarian charging into battle at full speed. The fact that he has aged is what will actually make this story far more interesting. You see this walks right into the plot of the movie. Which will focus on an aging ruler who has spent decades sitting on the throne before being forced back into conflict. I love the idea of an older Conan fighting to reclaim his purpose. This feels more  powerful than simply trying to recreate the past. It gives the character scars, history, and emotional weight. In many ways, it mirrors Arnold himself. A legendary action hero returning to one of the roles that helped build his empire.

Christopher McQuarrie directing also raises the excitement levels considerably. The man knows how to handle spectacle, tension, and character-driven action. If anyone can make an older Conan feel cinematic instead of nostalgic, it’s probably him. I also think that the fantasy genre could use a little more grit again. The modern fantasy films feel a tad too polished. Conan was dirty, violent and  sweaty. Steel clashed against bone, villains felt terrifying, and the world looked like a dangerous place.

That old-school sword-and-sorcery atmosphere still has a place today. For longtime fans, this return is more than just another sequel announcement. It’s a strange little time machine back to the VHS era. Back when Arnold Schwarzenegger stood at the centre of fantasy cinema with a sword in hand and somehow made every ridiculous line sound legendary.

And now the king may finally ride again.
