Enter The Backrooms If You Dare

I know that many of you have spent copious amounts of time wandering through YouTube rabbit holes, scrolling TikTok late at night, and lurking in the darker corners of Reddit, so I am willing to bet that you’ve stumbled across The Backrooms. What started as a bizarre piece of internet folklore quickly evolved into one of the most unsettling horror concepts online. Created by Kane Parsons, the series transformed bland office-like spaces, yellow walls, buzzing fluorescent lights, and endless empty hallways into pure nightmare fuel. There are no monsters encounters every five seconds, or tidy  explanations for that matter. All you have is the growing dread that you’ve somehow slipped into a place where reality no longer works properly.

Now that nightmare is heading to the big screen.

BACKROOMSarrives in South African cinemas on 29 May, bringing with it the same found-footage realism and skin-crawling atmosphere that turned Parsons’ videos into a viral sensation. This time, however, the experience expands beyond computer screens and mobile phones into something far bigger and far more immersive.

Expect endless corridors that seem to stretch forever. Expect fluorescent lights that hum with the kind of persistence that slowly drives you mad. Most of all, expect that constant feeling that something is there… just beyond your line of sight. If you’re already familiar with The Backrooms, you’ll know this isn’t your typical horror movie. It’s not about what you see. It’s about what your imagination convinces you is waiting around the next corner. Now that’s often far more terrifying.

Warning: The Backrooms aren’t a place you want to enter alone. Luckily, we’re giving away 5 double tickets and confectionery treats so you can bring a witness.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
