Buying a new phone online should be as easy as pie, right? You perform a simple search, find the model you want, pay for it and Bob’s your uncle.
But things get complicated sometimes. In today’s day and age, you often find yourself wondering whether the seller is legitimate, whether the warranty will actually mean anything and who you are supposed to contact when something goes wrong. And in a matter of minutes, buying a phone has turned into a small investigation.
OPPO hopes to remove some of that uncertainty with the launch of its official online store in South Africa. That’s right. No more hassle, only convenience. The store is available through the Shop Now section of the OPPO South Africa website and allows customers to buy directly from the company.
Now I know this is not the most dramatic technology announcement we have ever received. There are no folding screens, AI assistants or cameras capable of photographing the moon from another province.
It is simply a shop.
But having an official place to buy OPPO products online could make a real difference to South African customers. Especially those who prefer to know exactly who is taking their money. The store offers free delivery, an official warranty and direct customer support. Customers can pay upfront using a bank card or EFT, with contract options expected to arrive later. OPPO also allows returns or exchanges within seven days, although the usual terms and conditions apply.
Hui Chen, Vice President and Sales Director of OPPO South Africa, said the store forms part of the company’s longer-term investment in the country. This includes expanding its retail presence and introducing more products before the end of the year. That sounds amazing, but for most customers, the important part is probably much simpler. Should your OPPO present a problem, you will know exactly where to go.
Usually, buying from a large online marketplace means navigating several third-party sellers offering the same device at different prices. One listing may include an official local warranty, while another may involve an imported model with different support arrangements. And a third may simply leave you wondering why the price looks suspiciously good.
And yes, we all enjoy getting what we want at a bargain. But nobody enjoys discovering that the bargain has no warranty after the screen stops working.
The OPPO store includes OPPO Care benefits for eligible smartphones. Now, although the protection differs depending on which range you buy, there’s no reason to sweat, because you’ll be covered either way.
Customers purchasing the OPPO A6 Pro 5G receive 12 months of screen-repair cover. Reno series phones include 12 months of accidental-damage protection for the screen, rear cover and main board. But the Find series receives the most extensive package, which includes 12 months of accidental-damage protection, an additional year of warranty cover and a replacement for a factory fault reported within 180 days of purchase.
And, of course T’s & C’s apply, so customers should ensure they read the complete terms before buying. Accidental-damage plans often have conditions, exclusions and claims procedures. It is better to discover those details while the phone is still safely inside its box rather than after it has come face to face with the floor.
OPPO is also offering reduced prices on selected accessories when customers buy eligible smartphones. Those purchasing an OPPO A5, A6k or A6 can add Enco Buds3 Pro for R299. The earbuds drop to R249 when purchased with an A6 Pro 5G or selected Reno devices.
The A6 Pro 5G can also be paired with an OPPO Watch S for R2,499. Customers buying a Reno15 F 5G or Reno16 F 5G can add a Watch X2 Mini for R3,499. The Reno15 Pro 5G qualifies for a Watch X2 at R3,999, while Find X9 Pro buyers can add the same watch for R3,499.
Please bear in mind that these prices only apply when the accessories accompany an eligible smartphone purchase. So no, you cannot walk away with the discounted earbuds while politely declining the phone responsible for the discount. And the new store will not replace every reason to visit a physical retailer. I know that there are people out there who still prefer to hold a phone, to see how comfortably it fits into their hand or to inspect the display and determine whether the camera bump is going to present a problem for their pockets.
Contract customers will also have to wait for OPPO to introduce those purchasing options.
But for anyone already familiar with the device they want, an official online store offers something useful. It removes several questions from the buying process. OPPO sells the product directly, provides the official warranty and handles the customer support.
Not every technology launch needs to reinvent the smartphone.
Sometimes it only needs to make buying one less complicated.
