    Get Your Spook On! Halloween Events and History You Need to Know

    Carved pumpkins grinning menacingly, spooky figures lurking in the shadows, and the excited cries of “trick-or-treat!” echoing through the streets – it can only mean one thing: Halloween is upon us! But amidst the costumed chaos and candy collecting, have you ever stopped to wonder why this spooky celebration takes place on October 31st?

    A Celtic Connection: The Origins of Halloween

    Well, according to historical references, Halloween originated in the early Middle Ages with roots in an Ancient Celtic pagan festival of Samhain ( Pronounced “sow-in) (summer’s end). Predominantly celebrated in Ireland and Scotland, Samhain marked the end of summer and the harvest, ushering in the dark winter months. For the Celts, this transition was a time when the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds thinned, allowing spirits to return home.The transition from Autumn to Winter and the onset of the darker season which was celebrated on the 31st of October was also known as All Saint’s Eve or All Hallows eve, whose name shortened over time to Halloween.

    The Celts believed that the spiritual communication on Samhain made it easier for Celtic priests, or druids, to predict the future, so to appease the deities, they built bonfires and made sacrificial offerings. Some believe that this is the time when the physical and spiritual worlds are the closest and that the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes, perhaps to blend in with the spirit world and lit born fires to ward of the spirits.     Over the centuries, Halloween transitioned from a pagan ritual to a day of parties, costumes, jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating for kids and adults that we know and love today! While the religious aspects may have faded, the spirit of Halloween remains strong.
