Nintendo has finally shed some light on the successor to its wildly popular Switch console. While we’re still waiting for a full reveal, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently confirmed two key features on the platform X ( Formerly Twitter ) that have fans of the platform really excited: backwards compatibility and Nintendo Switch Online support. “This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”
That’s right, you’ll be able to dust off your favorite Switch games and play them on the new console. This is fantastic news for those who have amassed a sizable library of Switch titles and don’t want to leave them behind when they upgrade.
Nintendo Switch Online will also be making the jump to the new console. This means you’ll still be able to enjoy online multiplayer, cloud saves, and access to classic NES and Super NES games with your subscription.
These details were revealed during Nintendo’s recent Corporate Management Policy Briefing, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the future of the Switch. While Nintendo has been tight-lipped about the new console’s specs, features, and release date, a formal announcement is expected by the end of March 2025.
Nintendo also shared updates on the current Switch. While sales projections have been slightly adjusted downwards, the original Switch continues to perform well and recent titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” and “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” driving strong software sales.
With backwards compatibility and online play confirmed, the Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a worthy successor to the original which we will continue to enjoy as we eagerly await more details.
