George Wendt, the beloved actor best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the classic sitcom Cheers, has died at the age of 76. He passed peacefully in his sleep at his Los Angeles home on May 20, 2025, coinciding with the 32nd anniversary of the Cheers series finale.

Wendt’s portrayal of Norm Peterson, the affable bar regular with a sharp wit and a bottomless beer mug, made him a television icon. He earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. This does not come as a surprise, considering that he appeared in all 275 episodes of Cheers from 1982 to 1993. His signature entrance, greeted by a chorus of “Norm!” from fellow patrons, became a hallmark of the show.

Beyond Cheers, Wendt reprised his role as Norm in several spin-offs and guest appearances, including episodes of Frasier, Wings, and The Simpsons.  His character’s enduring popularity cemented Norm as one of television’s most memorable barflies.

George Robert Wendt Jr. was born on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He began his career with the city’s famed Second City comedy troupe. It was there  that he met his future wife, Bernadette Birkett. Birkett went on to later voice Norm’s unseen wife, Vera, on Cheers.  Wendt’s early screen roles included appearances in MASH*, Taxi, and Fletch, showcasing his versatility as a character actor.

His post-Cheers career spanned television, film, and theatre. Notably, he starred as Edna Turnblad in Broadway and touring productions of Hairspray, a role he cherished.  He also appeared in films like The Little Rascals and Forever Young, and lent his voice to animated series such as Family Guy.

News of Wendt’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Ted Danson, his Cheers co-star, expressed deep sorrow, referring to Wendt affectionately as “Georgie” and extending love to his family.  Others, including comedian Jeff Ross and actress Melissa Joan Hart, remembered him for his warmth, generosity, and professionalism. Wendt’s nephew, actor Jason Sudeikis, also paid homage, recalling his uncle’s appreciation for a Cheers tribute featured in the finale of Ted Lasso.

Wendt is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bernadette Birkett, their three children, and his extended family, including nephew Jason Sudeikis.  As fans raise a glass in his memory, the echo of “Norm!” will undoubtedly continue to ring out in bars and living rooms for years to come.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
