Actor Devin Harjes, known for his roles in “Boardwalk Empire” and “Daredevil,” died on Tuesday at the tender age of 41, a representative confirmed to NBC News. Harjes was at Mount Sinai West Hospital in New York City, after being diagnosed with cancer earlier that year at the time of his passing.
Born on July 29, 1983, in Lubbock, Texas, Harjes began his acting journey in the Dallas–Fort Worth theatre. He then moved to New York City to pursue his career. He gained early acclaim in off-Broadway productions, notably portraying Billy Bibbitt in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His screen career took off with a two-episode arc as heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire in 2011.
Harjes’s television portfolio included roles in Gotham, Orange Is the New Black, Daredevil, Blue Bloods, and a recurring role as Pete Baylor in Manifest. His film work featured performances in Surprise Surprise, Mr. Conovy, Rebel in the Rye, Boyz of Summer, and The Forest Is Red, for which he received Best Actor at Italy’s Tolentino International Film Festival.
“He was an artist of great conviction who never gave less than one hundred percent to any role he undertook,” his representative said in a statement. “As a person, he was generous, kind, understanding and devoted to his family and friends, a great horseback rider and had a magic way with all animals.”
Outside of acting, Harjes was passionate about martial arts and fitness. “Harjes is survived by his loving parents, Randy and Rosanne Harjes; his sister Trish Harjes and her husband Justin Kelley; nephews Tristin and Sawyer Kelley; nieces Rory and Charly Kelley; his former wife Shiva Shobitha; his beloved cat, Maude; and countless friends whose lives were brighter … or at least more entertaining … because of him.”
