Freakier Friday: A Mix Of Magic, Mayhem, and Millennials

Oh, you thought your mum embarrassing you on Instagram was bad? Imagine waking up in her body again, but this time with a twist, a TikTok, and possibly a tattoo. Welcome to Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to the body-switching chaos, now with a four-person body swap. The trailer is fast, loud, and full of sass. If you thought Freaky Friday was a quirky family comedy, Freakier Friday is its caffeinated Gen Z cousin, with eyeliner, existential dread, and a Bluetooth speaker blaring Olivia Rodrigo.

Slated for release on August 8, 2025,  Freakier Friday brings audiences back to the Coleman clan, where Anna (Lindsay Lohan) is all grown up and is now living her best chaotic adult life as a stressed-out music producer. Anna is getting ready to walk down the aisle, 22 years after she and her mum famously swapped bodies and learned some hard-earned empathy in each other’s shoes. Opposite her, the incomparable Jamie Lee Curtis returns as her yoga-loving, zen-seeking mother, Tess. Only now Tess is semi-retired, addicted to matcha, and possibly micro-dosing. The original mother-daughter switch was iconic. But this time? We’ve upgraded to multi-generational mayhem.

With Anna’s wedding just a week away, tensions are running high, especially between her daughter Riley (Julia Butters) and Lily (Sophia Hammons), the daughter of her fiancé, Eric ( Manny Jacinto).  History has a funny way of looping back, and this time it’s Anna’s daughter who’s not thrilled about the impending nuptials. The soon-to-be stepsisters aren’t exactly bonding…until a magical mishap forces all four family members into a chaotic body swap. Suddenly playing grown-up, the girls see their chance to sabotage the wedding from the inside. Teaming up with her soon-to-be stepsister, the two cook up a scheme to put the brakes on the wedding before the “I dos” can even begin.

Their plan? Reignite sparks between Anna and her old flame. And yes, that old flame is back, Chad Michael Murray returns, adding a nostalgic twist to the mayhem. Riley steals the trailer’s spotlight with eye rolls sharp enough to cut glass. When all four women mysteriously body-swap it’s Freaky Friday… on steroids.

Directed by Nisha Ganatra (Late Night), the film looks visually snappy and full of neon-tinged energy, bridging the Disney nostalgia with a sharper, modern edge. The writing team, headed by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body), brings that biting wit and heartfelt awkwardness only she can deliver. Yes, there’s still a fortune cookie involved. Yes, someone screams “I’m you?!” in a mirror. And yes, there’s a musical number.

    Geek Verdict:

The Freakier Friday trailer promises a zany, heartfelt ride through generational angst, identity crises, and the ultimate family group chat from hell. With its powerhouse returning cast, a wickedly funny new generation, and a tone that dances between absurdity and genuine feels, this one’s set to be the switch-hit of the year. If this trailer is anything to go by, Freakier Friday might just pull off the impossible, making us laugh, cry, and call our mums all in under two minutes.
