The Wrecking Crew Proves You Don’t Need Reinvention When the Vibes Are Right

Alright, listen up!, I’ve got some movie tea that’s hotter than the Hawaiian sun in The Wrecking Crew. The action comedy starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista has just dropped its earliest Rotten Tomatoes score, and let’s just say… critics are mostly into it.

A Sweet Spot on Rotten Tomatoes

Before you even queue it up on Prime Video, wich is only a few hours away……..(it premieres January 28, 2026), the movie’s sitting at a strong ~85% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s hovering in that sweet  fresh spot that’s not overly confident or tries too hard. It’s seasoned just enough, and lands exactly where it should. Critics aren’t shouting about it… they’re leaning in, smirking, and quietly thinking, yeah, this one’s a yes.

So what’s got them all swooning?

    Chemistry That Carries the Movie

What is most talked about, is the chemistry between Momoa and Bautista. Nothing speaks louder than when two actors just click,  like peanut butter and jelly, or like you and that one friend who gets your memes before anyone else. That’s what this is about. Their half-brother dynamic brings a playful spark to the screen even when the plot’s doing its best “been here before” thing.

    Brothers, Secrets, and Bad Blood

Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista star as half brothers Jonny and James Hale. One’s a cop that rules by the book and the other is a battle-hardened Navy SEAL, who team up to investigate the mysterious death of their father. When the truth behind the so-called hit-and-run starts to unravel, they’re forced into an uncomfortable partnership. What begins as a search for answers quickly spirals into a web of conspiracies and jaw-dropping revelations. This  pushes their already fragile family bond to its absolute limit. What follows are personality clashes and bickering, making it difficult for them to sing of the same hymn sheet.

A Cast That Backs It Up

They are supported by a stacked cast that includes Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Stephen Root, Morena Baccarin, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Maia Kealoha, Lydia Peckham, and Stephen Oyoung. The Prime Video action-comedy is directed by Blue Beetle’s Ángel Manuel Soto and written by Jonathan Tropper, whose credits include The Adam Project, See, Your Friends and Neighbors, and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter.

    Familiar, Fun, and Well Played

Critics agree the story isn’t out here reinventing the genre, and that’s fair. But it’s execution keeps you glued to the screen. It knows exactly what it is and leans into it, like a familiar favourite with just enough heat to keep things interesting. Sure, a few reviewers raised an eyebrow at how predictable parts of the script can be, or how the tone occasionally bounces between silly and serious. But when Momoa and Bautista are on screen together, it barely matters. Their chemistry does most of the heavy lifting, turning even the rough edges into part of the fun, like background noise you happily ignore during a great night out.

    Geek Verdict:

if you’re into high-energy action with a wink and a grin, The Wrecking Crew is stacking up as one of the season’s most playful surprises. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it sure knows how to make it spin with style.

It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
