The End of Showmax With A Redirection To Something Familiar

The end of Showmax is here. Subscribers are being moved to DStv Stream with a trial and discount, but the switch isn’t automatic.

Showmax Is Officially Shutting Down in South Africa

We recently told you that Showmax was shutting down in South Africa, and now it’s official. MultiChoice is shutting down Showmax at the end of April. But instead of pretending everything is fine, they’re doing what the industry does best when things get complicated. They are redirecting. Yes, and in this case, straight into the arms of DStv Stream.

The R99 Deal That Comes With a Timer

So, if you’re a Showmax subscriber, you’re not being left completely stranded. There’s a soft landing. A one-month free trial for DStv Stream Compact, running through to the end of May. The pitch is: Try it and see if it sticks. And if it does, the real offer kicks in. You can stay on DStv Stream Compact for R99 a month for the next 12 months. Which sounds generous… until you realise the standard price sits somewhere between R299 and R399 depending on how you subscribe. So yes, it’s a deal with a countdown.

No Auto-Migration, You Have to Start Again

Now don’t be fooled. This isn’t an automatic migration. Nobody is quietly moving your profile over while you sleep. If you want to keep watching, you’ll need to sign up again, create a new profile, and follow the steps they send you. But the bonus is that, it’s quick. Apparently under five minutes. But even that small bit of friction matters. Because in streaming, convenience is everything. The moment you make people think, even slightly, you risk losing them.

    Why MultiChoice Is Consolidating Platforms

The bigger play here is obvious though. MultiChoice isn’t just shutting something down. They’re consolidating and pulling everything into one place. Showmax Originals, live TV, sport, international content, all sitting inside a single platform. Which makes sense, because what you could end up with a   cleaner, simpler, and more controlled experience.

    Will The Redirection Prevail

Streaming has become an expensive game to play, and Showmax, despite its growth, just wasn’t sustainable on its own anymore. So this is less of a goodbye and more of a reshuffle. Still, there’s something about it that feels… familiar. Another platform we got used to. Another app that quietly became part of the routine. Now being folded into something bigger, louder, and a little less personal. You can almost hear the message underneath it all. We’re not losing content, we’re just changing where you find it. But whether people follow is a different story.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
